Beyond the Fog Featured, Reviews Film Threat

May 22, 2024

In Desirée Abeyta’s short film, Beyond the Fog, June and her daughter, Matilda, live in a remote cabin in the forest. Once in every girl’s life, she must wander out into the forest and confront the mysterious fog. June’s experience as a teen was fraught with peril, but today, June is determined that Matilda is prepared for what she is about to face.
Do I have to mention that the “fog” may be an allegory for that particular moment in a girl’s life? As an allegory, Beyond the Fog hits the mark. It’s the story of a mysterious rite of passage for girls and, through the storytelling, gives a glimpse (especially for this dude) into what this moment…this transition to womanhood may feel like mentally and emotionally.

“…she must wander out into the forest and confront the mysterious fog.”
Beyond the Fog is a thoughtful tale from the perspective of a mother who wants to pass on as much wisdom to her daughter as she possibly can without feeling like she is controlling or being too overly protective (which she might be).
Across the board, from acting to cinematography to editing, Beyond the Fog gets its message across in a profound and considerate way.
