The news that Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been renewed for a second season on Prime Video, filling fans with excitement…before filling them with disappointment at the news that lead stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine would not return. While the second season’s lack of Glover and Erskine was widely reported at the time, co-creator Francesca Sloane has now revealed (via EW) that this may not be the case after all. Though it still could be, as that’s how cliffhangers work. As Sloan explained…

“I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?’ We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven’t said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?”

Inspired by the 2005 film of the same name starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows a pair of secret agents who must pretend to be a married couple, taking on the names “John” and “Jane” Smith. The first season ends with all manner of action and gunfire as our John and Jane Smith find themselves doing battle with another John and Jane Smith, their fates left uncertain.

And, according to Sloane, writing for season 2 has not even begun yet. Thus, Glover and Erskine’s Smiths could potentially still be alive, with Sloane assuring at the very least that “there will be an answer as to what happened at the end of season 1 in season 2.”

“We didn’t even get to start writing [season 2] yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.”

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was officially renewed for a second season earlier this month, with the head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, heaping praise on creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane and excited to bring audiences more of this “sexy reinvention.”

“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ is in the works for our global Prime Video customers. The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane.
