Kathryn Hahn’s MCU Villain Will Assemble A Team Of “Covenless Witches” In Upcoming Disney+ Series

Jun 28, 2024

When MCU fans last saw Kathryn Hahn‘s Agatha Harkness in the 2021 Disney+ show “WandaVision,” the jig was up.  Wanda Maximoff had figured out her next-door neighbor Agnes was really Agatha, and used magic to keep Agatha trapped in Westview in her Agnes persona with the help of magic runes. But the Scarlet Witch’s trick couldn’t keep Agatha trapped forever, and that’s where “Agatha All Along,” the next MCU Disney+ series, picks up.

But with mere weeks before the show’s Fall premiere, details remain scarce about the miniseries; that is, until now.  Empire has the scoop in this case, providing some additional plot points outside Agatha breaking out her containment in New Jersey and vying to regain her powers. It turns out Agatha will need some help reacquiring her skills, but as “WandaVision” creator Jac Schaeffer hints, fellow witches aren’t the easiest people to cooperate with.
And in the case of Agatha, she’ll need to assemble “a disparate, mixed bag of witches” to return to full force, like Patti LuPone‘s Lilia, Sasheer Zamata‘s Jennifer, Debra Jo Rupp‘s Sharon, and Ali Ahn‘s Alice.  Don’t expect these witches to measure up to conventional stereotypes either, warns Schaeffer. “What they have in common is that they’re covenless witches,” the showrunner explained to Empire. “Witches are defined by deception, treachery, villainy, and selfishness. What do you do when you have a group of witches who [demonstrate] those notions and you need them to work together?” A lot of trickery, for one thing.
Schaeffer remained coy on just how unruly this new cabal will get, but she did promise that “Agatha All Along” will upend a lot of assumptions the audience has about witches in general.  “”WandaVision” played with the form of classic TV sitcoms, [but here] we do a lot of playing with what the assumptions about witches are,” she said. “Like, what are the shorthand visuals for witches?” But despite the show’s focus on witchcraft, Schaeffer promises it’ll still have a similar emotional thruline to “WandaVision.” “We certainly didn’t want a one-dimensional nasty witch,” she continued. “We will have moments where we see Agatha’s true heart.” And Schaeffer teased “WandaVision” songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have new songs ready for “Agatha All Along,” too, so look at the new series as a spiritual sequel to the 2021 show.
“Agatha All Along” premieres on September 18 with its first two episodes, with new episodes premiering weekly through November 6. And as only the third MCU entry in 2024 (after “Echo” in January and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” in theaters next month), expect all eyes to be on how this new series does with critics and audiences.  Lots of people loved “WandaVision,” but the MCU has faced a rocky road since then. Maybe Marvel fans will know what to expect once an “Agatha All Along” trailer drops sometime this summer.
