Joel McHale Says ‘Community’ Film Will Happen & Don’t Blame Donald Glover For The Delay

Jul 8, 2024

There’s good news and bad news about the “Community” film, per a new interview with actor Joel McHale. The good news is that it seems like it’s still going to happen. The bad news, however, is schedules can be a pain in the ass.

Speaking to GQ about his recent appearance in “The Bear” Season 3, Joel McHale was asked about the status of the long-in-development “Community” feature film. And that’s when he dropped the good news—apparently, the film is going to be made, and Peacock has agreed to foot the bill.
“Oh, well, it hasn’t been shot yet. It will be,” McHale said. “And I don’t have a definitive update because we thought for a moment it was going to all happen this year, and then it didn’t. But we have the money, and that is a huge step. And hopefully, people still want to see it. And Peacock’s paying for it. And so I can’t wait to do it. I’ll say vaguely next year. How about that?”

That said, there are still quite a few unknowns surrounding the film, particularly with the scheduling. The ensemble has to all be ready at the same time to get it done, and yes, that includes Donald Glover, who has gone on to become an A-lister since the show ended. But don’t go blaming Glover for the most recent false-start. That’s all McHale’s fault.
“If it’s anybody’s fault, it’s my schedule on this one,” explained McHale. “It’s not his at all. He was available. No, no, no, no… That was definitely not true. It was not Donald’s schedule. We love Donald. You can fully blame my schedule.”
Obviously, fans of “Community” have already been waiting years to see the film, so waiting a bit longer is not the end of the world. Everyone just wants this film to be done the right way. In the meantime, you can just do another rewatch of the original series as we wait for the film.
