Prime Video Cancels American Rust After Season 2

Jul 28, 2024

American Rust, the gripping crime drama, has faced cancelation once again (per Deadline). Prime Video, after rescuing the series from oblivion, has decided not to renew it for a third season. Despite the show only beginning to navigate its way through a second season, which premiered on Prime Video on March 28, 2024, and was titled American Rust: Broken Justice, the streamer’s decision not to go through with the renewal seems anticipatory. Especially now that Maura Tierney has been cast as a series regular on NBC’s Law & Order.

American Rust debuted on Showtime in September 2021 but before that, it faced several early setbacks. When it finally found a home on the premium cable network and found a star and executive producer in Jeff Daniels, it failed to garner strong ratings and was canceled. Amazon Freevee stepped in to rescue the show in June 2022 and the crime drama eventually migrated to sibling Prime Video, which carried the second season.

The history of American Rust’s cancelations highlights just how challenging the landscape for dramas is today. With the crowded streaming environment, it is impossible for a serialized show to gain enough buzz that the showrunners and platform hope for. Besides, established streamers like Prime Video already have little patience for shows that are unable to engage audiences.

A Tale of Economic Decline in a Pennsylvania Town

Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel, American Rust explored the haunting lies between local systems of power and the constant decay of the American rust belt. It followed Del Harris (played by Daniels), the compromised chief of police of his hometown, Buell, Pennsylvania. When news of a murder surfaces, Del is forced to confront his past and question everything he has ever known.

While the first season centered on the murder investigation and the false accusation about the woman he loves (played by Tierney), it also explored economic decline, shady business dealings, and trouble in the downtrodden town. Season 2, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, on the other hand, saw PA. Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) trying to rebuild their lives.

While Daniels’ portrayal of Chief Harris anchored the series and his conflicted loyalties added depth to the character, Tierney’s Grace brought quiet determination and a fiercely protective air to the tight-knit community’s dark and grim history. The ensemble cast included David Alvarez as Isaac English, Alex Neustaedter as Billy Poe, and Mark Pellegrino as Virgil Poe. Rob Yang. Luna Lauren Velez joined the cast as Detective Angela Burgos.

With that said, the news of cancelation of American Rust makes us reflect on all that hindered the show’s growth. From the odd choice of a binge-release strategy to the mixed-to-negative reviews from fans and critics, the show flickered before fading and showed what a struggle it is for a series to maintain audiences when shunted around from one platform to the next.
