Deadpool & Wolverine Helped Nathan Fillion Break a Marvel Record

Aug 14, 2024

Some actors, like Chris Evans and Gemma Chan, have played two characters in the MCU. However, thanks to his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, MCU veteran Nathan Fillion holds the record for the most Marvel roles. The actor (a frequent collaborator with James Gunn) was previously tied for the record with Patton Oswalt, who played separate characters in Blade: Trinity, Agents of Shield, and MODOK. However, Fillion’s newest cameo has earned him the top spot.

Nathan Fillion first joined the MCU in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. In the film, Fillion plays an unnamed alien inmate who describes (in way too much detail) his desires for his new and unwilling romantic partner, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). However, the alien’s plans are cut short when Groot (Vin Diesel) brutally breaks his nose. Fillion then made a separate cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In a deleted scene, Fillion appeared on several posters promoting a fictional Simon Williams film festival. Fans of Marvel Comics will know Simon Williams by his alter ego Wonder Man.

His final cameo in Gunn’s Guardians trilogy finally let the actor show his face on camera. Fillion played the head of security in the High Evolutionary’s Orgoscope. Donning a strangely puffy suit of armor, Fillion’s cameo in the film is far more substantial than his previous MCU appearances, as he apprehends the Guardians and helps Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) torture a former Ravager.

Nathan Filion’s fourth and record-breaking cameo in the MCU comes towards the end of Deadpool & Wolverine. As a cavalcade of Deadpool variants escape from The Void, a Deadpool head with a propeller can be seen floating among them. Known as Headpool, this dismembered version of the character is voiced by none other than Nathan Fillion.

Nathan Fillion Has Another Superhero Role in the Works

Nathan Fillion has become renowned for his cameos and starring roles in science-fiction and superhero projects. One of Fillion’s most famous roles to date comes in the canceled-too-soon space western Firefly. Fillion’s next superhero role sets the actor out among the stars once again as he joins James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

Fillion has the weight of a fandom on his shoulders as he brings Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns, to the big screen in Superman. The Lantern Corps hasn’t been properly featured (outside a brief cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League) in a DC movie since the critically lambasted Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Fillion will play a supporting role in Superman before the Lantern Corps is given their own standalone series, aptly titled Lanterns.

Guy Gardner is a veritable newcomer to the big screen. Reynolds portrayed Hal Jordan, the most popular Green Lantern from the comics, in his 2011 feature film. For audiences unaware of Guy Gardner, Fillion has previously outlined his new DCU character, and he’s not as morally upstanding as you might think. Fillion said:

“Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.”

Deadpool & Wolverine
is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
Lanterns
, which will premiere on HBO and Max, currently does not have a release date.
