Aug 17, 2024

Summary

Simu Liu confirms Shang-Chi 2 is still happening in a recent interview.
Marvel hasn’t officially announced Shang-Chi 2, but plans seem to be progressing.
Possible release dates for Shang-Chi 2 suggest it could be part of MCU Phase 6 or Phase 7.

Simu Liu offers a new update on Shang-Chi 2, confirming the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel is still in the works. One of the newest heroes in the MCU, who fans are waiting to see come back as soon as possible, is Shang-Chi, following his debut in 2021. Despite coming out during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the ending of Shang-Chi left the audience wanting more. It’s been reported that Marvel is working on Shang-Chi 2, though the studio hasn’t formally announced it.

In a new interview with PTI (via Times of India), Liu was asked if he could reveal anything new about Shang-Chi 2. Without getting too specific about it, Liu promised that Shang-Chi 2 is still happening. He shared the following:

A lot of it is above my pay grade, but it’s definitely happening
. So just very excited to kind of work on it and it’s going to be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that.

When Shang-Chi 2 Could Release In Marvel’s Movie Slate

Even though Marvel Studios hasn’t released any concrete Shang-Chi 2 updates, something is clearly going on behind the scenes for Liu to be able to state that the movie is still happening. If that is indeed the plan, there are two approaches to get Shang-Chi 2 to land somewhere in The Multiverse Saga. As of right now, there are four dates on Marvel Studios’ schedule over the next few years with untitled projects slotted in there.

If Shang-Chi 2 starts filming in early 2025, the sequel could easily land on the February 13, 2026, slot, presuming that post-production doesn’t get dragged out for too long. However, if Shang-Chi 2 began principal photography in Q3 or Q4 of 2025, Liu’s film could be released on November 6, 2026. Both the 2026 dates are dependent on Shang-Chi 2 also having its script ready, which is unclear at this point.

Upcoming Marvel Studios Mystery Movie Release Dates February 13, 2026 November 6, 2026 July 23, 2027 November 5, 2027

It wouldn’t be shocking, however, if Shang-Chi 2 is saved until after The Multiverse Saga and arrives at the start of Phase 7. Whether it is on July 23 or November 5, 2027, Shang-Chi 2 could be one of the first MCU projects to explore whatever becomes of the franchise after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is rumored to lead to a soft reboot of the timeline. Hopefully, more news on Shang-Chi 2 will emerge sooner rather than later.

Shang-Chi 2 Shang-Chi 2 is the direct sequel to Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It brings back Simu Liu’s titular martial arts expert after his fight with his father Xu Wenwu, now wielding the ten rings and confident in his skills as a superhero.Director Destin Daniel Cretton Runtime TBC
