It looks like we’re getting some more “Pacific Rim” in the future. Though, it appears Guillermo del Toro won’t be involved, sadly.

According to Variety, Legendary has made a first-look TV deal with writer Eric Heisserer, and his first order of business will be to develop a “Pacific Rim” prequel series. For those who haven’t followed the “Pacific Rim” franchise, the two previous films told the story of big kaiju battles between monsters and human-piloted mechs. Nothing is really known about the prequel series, other than it will likely feature more skyscraper-sized monsters doing battle with humans.

Heisserer is probably best known as the Oscar-nominated writer of the sci-fi film, “Arrival.” More recently, he was the writer-showrunner for the Netflix fantasy series, “Shadow & Bone.” Other projects he’s worked on include “Lights Out,” “Bird Box,” and the Vin Diesel superhero film, “Bloodshot.”
“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”
According to the report, Heisserer’s deal was made with the hope that the writer could help develop a number of IP-based projects like the “Pacific Rim” prequel. It’s unclear what other IPs he’s going to work on, but Legendary has its fair share of potential work for him. The studio is no stranger to IP, as the people behind the “Godzilla”-led MonsterVerse and “Dune.”
It’s obviously a bit too soon to know when we might see the “Pacific Rim” series debut.
