Gladiator II’s stunning practical sets are brought to life in a new time-lapse video. Several intricate sets needed to be constructed for the long-awaited sequel, including the Colosseum itself, where much of the fighting that Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal) engages in will take place. This is where Lucius will face Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and other threats in Gladiator II’s story, while Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) watch the fights to the death for their own amusement.

A new Gladiator video posted on X shows the Colosseum and the other practical sets being constructed through a detailed time-lapse, with Quinn praising how these designs made ancient Rome feel real for the film. Check out the video below:

Quinn captures the massive scale and spectacle of these sets by describing them as “a once in a lifetime thing to bear witness to,” with high praise coming from an actor who has already been a part of several other franchises with significant production value.

The Sequel Will Try To Live Up To The Original Movie

Since the release of the original Gladiator in 2000, few films have managed to be as epic. Gladiator was a near-impossible feat that boasted stellar leading performances from Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, a gripping story, and thrilling action, all of which were enhanced by Hans Zimmer’s original score and visually captivating cinematography. Gladiator set a high bar for Gladiator II to meet, let alone surpass, but the gorgeously rendered practical sets are a promising sign.

The trailers have teased that the threats Lucius and other Gladiator II characters encounter in the Colosseum will be even more perilous than what Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe) faced. At certain points, the Colosseum will be filled with water, with Lucius and the other gladiators needing to stay afloat and navigate the watery depths beneath them while being attacked. Fearsome animals not featured during the gladiator matches in the previous film, including a rhinoceros, will join the fighting as well.

As Lucius takes on these challenges and the more far-reaching threats posed by the two emperors and Acacius, the enormity of what he faces is clearly represented in the visual scale of the Colosseum. What has been shown in the trailers and in the time-lapse video bodes well for Gladiator II and its promising story. Nevertheless, it will be difficult to reach the heights of its predecessor, which has stood the test of time more than two decades since it was released.
