The Keri Russell-Starring Netflix Political Drama Returns October 31
Sep 5, 2024
Stately homes, state secrets, high treason, high tea. Certainly coming out of left field as not only a hit but a critically acclaimed political drama, “The Diplomat,” starring Keri Russell, really took off in its debut season in fall 2023. Back quickly, one year later, the Netflix series is set to premiere on the streaming channel on October 31.
Season one ended on a cliffhanger, and “The Diplomat” creator Debora Cahn teased what is to come in a recent Tudum interview.
“Season 1 ended with Kate’s (Russell) realization that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the U.K. wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister,” she said. “Now she has to prove it. The U.S. and the U.K. don’t spy on each other. In fact, they share all their intelligence. So, how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”
Fall 2024 TV Preview: 40 Must-See Series To Watch
Additional cast on the series includes Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, Miguel Sandoval, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, and newcomer to the series Allison Janney, who plays the American VP.
Here’s the official synopsis:
A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Keri Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the U.K. didn’t come from a rival nation; it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), who is very much alive and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
Janice Williams, Alex Graves, and Keri Russell serve as Executive Producers.
Find out who survived that major finale explosion in season one and where Kate’s relationships go from here when “The Diplomat” returns on Thursday, October 31. Watch the new teaser trailer below.
