Stranger Things Actor Not Returning for Season 5

Sep 7, 2024

Stranger Things actress Catherine Curtin will not reprise her role as Claudia Henderson for the fifth and final season of the beloved Netflix series. As the mother of Dustin Henderson (played by Gaten Matarazzo), she is one of the surviving inhabitants of Hawkins, where Stranger Things primarily takes place, but will not return to the show due to scheduling conflicts.

Although Curtin’s character is still alive, Screen Rant reports that the actress has been preoccupied with shooting the upcoming film Saturday Night, which follows the story of Saturday Night Live’s premiere in 1975. Despite being unable to return for Stranger Things’ final season, Curtin shared her correspondence with her co-stars, saying that fans will not feel disappointed by the long wait. This is the first update fans have received regarding Stranger Things in nearly two months, with Netflix reporting in July that season 5 will debut sometime in 2025.

Mrs. Henderson will be missed in season 5. Reviews of earlier seasons praised the inclusion of the main protagonists’ family members, with glimpses into their home lives providing an essential, sentimental aspect to the show while also raising the stakes of catastrophic moments, such as the showdown with Vecna at the end of Season 4. Longtime viewers might also recall when the fiercely protective Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) desperately searched for her missing son in Season 1. These moments have defined the show since its inception, and it’s a shame we won’t see one final, heartwarming scene between Dustin and his mom at the conclusion of Season 5.

News From the Upside-Down

Stranger Things Season 5 has been significantly delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strikes in the summer of 2023, but production resumed in earnest this January. Still, not much is known about the final season besides its tentative release date sometime in 2025 – and, of course, its promise to shatter fans’ expectations. Apart from Curtin, the rest of the original cast is expected to return; they will be accompanied by actress Linda Hamilton of Terminator fame, playing an unnamed character that is likely to be the season’s main villain.

With a long wait still ahead of them, fans have floated numerous predictions for the final season. Popular theories include time travel or interdimensional voyages, while a picture of blood-soaked shoes shared by Ross Duffer, one of the show’s creators, sparked speculation of a darker, more ominous tone for the series’ epic conclusion. Who in Hawkins will be safe from the Upside-Down?
