Nightcap | Film Threat

Feb 1, 2023

Running at three and a half minutes, Nicole de Meneses’ horror short, Nightcap, gets right to the point.
After what appears to be a successful date, Lina (Veronica LaVery) invites J (Jiz Lee) into her apartment for a “nightcap.” Unbeknownst to the pair, there is a stalker (Jay Drake) just lurking out of view. Inside, Lina asks J to get some glasses from the kitchen as she gets into something more comfortable. While in the state of undress, Lina is confronted by the stalker.

“While in the state of undress, Lina is confronted by the stalker.”
Look, it’s not easy reviewing a very short short film like Nightcap, but here it goes. Writer-director Nicole de Meneses made a DIY short made on the cheap. That said, the filmmaker does a fantastic job giving her movie the look and cinematic feel of the old exploitation horror films of the 1960s and 70s. She accomplishes this thanks to the clever use of filters. Speaking of exploitation, as Lina, Veronica LaVery is very sexy. You’ll have to see it to know what I mean.
Like a good horror short, a button at the end gives this eerie tale the perfect, logical punchline. As brief as this is, writer/director Nicole de Meneses makes excellent use of every second of Nightcap. It really is the perfect movie for any film festival.
