Transformers One Sequel Depends On 1 Condition, Gets Encouraging Update From Franchise Producer
Sep 15, 2024
The upcoming animated film Transformers One gets a promising response from franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, regarding a possible sequel. The movie will serve as the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron. The two are commonly known as rivals but, in the new animated movie, they’re friends to the point that they are also brothers. Transformers One has an ensemble voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth (Optimus Prime), Brian Tyree Henry (Megatron), Scarlet Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jon Hamm.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Bonaventura discussed the possibility of a sequel to Transformers One a week before its theatrical release. The producer says that, if the first film is successful, the creative team will do a sequel. He elaborated that they already have ideas for a second movie, teasing that it will be character-based just like Transformers One. Read his full comment below:
Number one, if we’re successful with this movie, we’re going to do a sequel for this. And we already have, I think, the beginnings of a really interesting story for the second one, which is also character-based, the way the first [is].
Early Reviews For Transformers One Bode Well For Its Box Office Run
The Transformers Franchise Already Makes A Lot Of Money.
The chances of a sequel will ultimately come down to the opening weekend overall box office. The franchise has been a big moneymaker for Hasbro, leading to seven installments, including Transformers One. Even the whole film series has accumulated over $5 billion at the box office to solidify itself as one of the biggest movie franchises. However, given that Transformers One goes on a different route with its animated approach rather than live-action, it would need to become a box-office success to secure any chance of a sequel. Currently, its estimated budget remains unknown.
Thankfully, Transformers One’s first wave of reviews has been generally positive, highlighting that the newest entry best represents the series. At the time of writing, the film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% from 44 critics, making it one of the best-rated movies in the franchise thus far. The consensus among critics is that the film’s drama is accompanied by a satisfying dash of humor, although some noted the movie may be tough to follow for casual watchers.
Its early reviews and Bonaventura’s promise of a great story and fleshed-out characters might be a sign that the film will be not just a critical success but also a commercial one.
The Transformers franchise as a whole performs well at the global box office, regardless of its Tomatometers. Transformers: Rise of the Beast received a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics but made $438 million at the global box office. A low score from critics and a high pull at the box office is a trend usually seen in Transformers movies. While Transformers One isn’t live-action, its early reviews and Bonaventura’s promise of a great story and fleshed-out characters might be a sign that the film will be not just a critical success but also a commercial one.
