A Mother & Son Search For Each Other Through War-Torn London In Apple’s New WW2 Drama

Sep 20, 2024

The first trailer for Blitz has been released. Directed by Steve McQueen, the film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman, Elliott Heffernan, and more. The film takes place during World War II and will have its world premiere at the London Film Festival in October. Ronan will star as Rita, who sends her young son George (Heffernan) to the English countryside during the war. George, however, is determined to return to his mother and so begins a harrowing journey to reunite.

Ahead of its premiere, Apple has released the first trailer for Blitz. The clip shows the reality London faced during the war, with the city frequently bombed by the Nazis. George, in particular, seems to be in the midst of a lot of action as he runs through London during several attacks and shelters underground with other people seeking safety from the bombs, all while Rita searches for him. Check out the Blitz trailer below:

Blitz’s Trailer Is Finally Here
Will Blitz Shake Up The Oscar Race?

Blitz has long been in development, with the project initially announced in 2021 and filming beginning the following year in November 2022. The film has long been seen as one that could potentially have a huge impact on awards season. McQueen is an acclaimed filmmaker with movies like Shame, Hunger, and Widows all earning high marks from critics.

The director really broke through with 12 Years A Slave, though, which earned him Best Picture and Best Director nominations at the Academy Awards, among the film’s 9 total nods. Blitz’s trailer reveals the gorgeous and harrowing landscape McQueen is working with, and it’s easy to see him earning accolades for the film.

Additionally, Ronan is long overdue for some recognition from the Academy, though Blitz is not her only film in the running. Ronan has been tapped as a potential 2025 Best Actress nominee since her film The Outrun debuted earlier this year at Sundance. It remains to be seen which role could ultimately land her a nom, if any, but Blitz certainly has the pedigree (and the studio behind it) to push for a big awards play.

Our Take On The Blitz Trailer
McQueen & Ronan Are A Dream Team

From the beginning of the clip, it’s clear that McQueen is in his element. While the director’s previous work was served on a more intimate scale, his vision translates well to the epic stage that is World War II. It’s clear, though, that McQueen isn’t forsaking intimate drama for blockbuster spectacle.

The story between Rita and George at the center of the film is clearly its heartbeat and will serve as the emotional throughline of the film. It’s a classic story – loved ones separated, searching for each other in dire circumstances – but it’s clear that McQueen’s visuals combined with what is sure to be a compelling performance from Ronan will ensure Blitz is not to be missed.
