Marvel Cancels Disney Channel Series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur After 2 Seasons
Oct 25, 2024
Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur has reportedly become the latest Marvel project to be canceled. Marvel Studios is not renowned for officially canceling their TV shows, with many of them instead gaining the “limited series” tag to avoid any kind of reputation for abandoning projects after a single season. However, it has been suggested that their Disney Channel animated series will not be advancing beyond its second season.
The news comes courtesy of X/Twitter user @owlphibia, who suggested that Disney Television Animation will not be following up the two highly-praised seasons of Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur with a third. While this kind of news usually has an equal chance of being just speculation, the reveal was given weight by storyboard artist Gabi Rode, who shared a comment that seemed to confirm the news. Commenting on the platform, Rode said:
“What sucks is that a bunch of us at Disney knew about this for so long but couldn’t outright say it. The [Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur] production area was a ghost town for over a year.”
Fans of the series are not completely left out at sea, as the final 10 episodes of the show are still to be released and, according to the same source, will be debuting on the Disney Channel early in 2025. For those worried that these episodes may leave audiences in limbo with a cliffhanger, the report also mentions that this is not the case and the series ends on a complete note. In itself, this almost suggests that the intention was always to end Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur after two seasons.
What is Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur About?
One of Marvel Comics’ lesser known duos, Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur centers on the adventures of Lunella Lafayette and her prehistoric companion, Devil Dinosaur. Lunella is a regular 13-year-old girl living in New York City. Naturally, being the lead of a Marvel story means that she is not quite that regular. Imagine a Big Apple version of Black Panther’s incredibly minded Shuri and you are half way there. In this case, the genius child finds her life changed on the day she opens a mysterious portal and a red Tyrannosaur appears in her modern world. In true comic book style, very soon Lunella becomes the superhero Moongirl and, with her new sidekick, begins taking on an array of colorful and crazy villains.
Despite being an animated series that mostly acts as a standalone show, Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur does include a connection to the wider MCU, just to remind everyone that, despite being told in animated form for younger audiences, the story very much takes place in the world where the Avengers save the universe on a regular basis. The show stars Diamond White as the titular heroine, and Fred Tatasciore as her dino partner (and other characters). As well as Alison Brie, Jennifer Hudson, Maya Hawke, Daveed Diggs, and Wesley Snipes, the show also features Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Ben Foster, the scientist he played in Ant-Man and the Wasp, who has in depth knowledge of Pym particles.
Related Why Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is Perfect for Spider-Verse Fans With great visuals, amazing music, and fun plots, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a great meal for fans of the Spider-Verse.
Moongirl and Devil Dinosaur may not be considered essential viewing by many MCU fans, partly thanks to being aimed at a younger audience, but it is the only Marvel Studios project to receive a perfect 100% score from critics – besting Ms. Marvel’s 98%. The series also scored an incredibly high 93%, making its cancelation even more of a disappointment for fans.
