Born Again Star Teases Major Change From Netflix Series
Oct 28, 2024
Daredevil: Born Again arrived at New York Comic Con this weekend, as series stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’onofrio surprised attendees with an official release date and exciting new details. The superhero’s future was left uncertain when Netflix canceled Daredevil after three critically-acclaimed seasons, but Disney+ is finally answering the call and continuing the Man Without Fear’s storyline. However, Daredevil: Born Again will be changing one major aspect of the original series and give a fan-favorite villain a lot more development.
While attending New York Comic Con (via Rotten Tomatoes), Daredevil stars Cox and D’onofrio dished about the upcoming Daredevil revival from Disney+. They kept some details close to the chest, but revealed that audiences will be seeing Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin in a way they haven’t before. The villain has been a prominent character since the very first season, but it seems Born Again features a more “behind the scenes” look at the Kingpin’s dealings in New York City. Here’s what Cox said about Born Again differentiating itself from the Netflix show:
Something that’s a bit different that, I feel like, we get a much deeper look behind the scenes of Fisk’s world than we have necessarily, in the past. And that is, I think, a different kind of way, which direction the show is taking, which is really exciting.
The upcoming Daredevil revival will be a nine-episode endeavor, a far cry from the original nearly 20-episode season that was announced a few years ago. This is mainly due to the fact production stopped halfway through filming, leading to the writers making significant changes to keep it more in line with the original series. It seems that a good chunk of the shortened season will be dedicated to Wilson Fisk, who will be very busy this time around for non-mob-related reasons. One of the main factors for the extra focus on Kingpin may be his reported intentions to become an elected government official.
A New Chapter for Kingpin & Daredevil
The biggest change in Daredevil: Born Again has been an open secret for some time. If the reports are true, Wilson Fisk is looking to become the mayor of New York City, leaving his criminal life behind as the Kingpin for a seat in the government. A former mob boss winning an election isn’t totally unrealistic at this point, and it’s also based on the comic book storyline that saw Fisk team up with Daredevil as an elected official. Due to the power vacuum Kingpin leaves behind in the criminal underworld, the adversaries are forced to use their powers for good. The official synopsis teases as much:
“Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.”
Related Marvel Boss Likens Daredevil Disney+ Series to Game of Thrones Daredevil: Born Again’s Hell’s Kitchen is as violent as brutal as Westeros, according to Brad Winderbaum.
Unlike previous seasons, Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk could be putting their differences aside to make their home city a better place. Of course, it’s inevitable that they will be at each other’s throats by the end of Born Again, but an alliance could be the change of pace the show needs to differentiate itself from the Netflix version without losing what made it so good. As announced at New York Comic-Con, Daredevil: Born Again is set to stream on Disney+ March 4, 2025.
Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk try to put their rivalry and darker alter-egos aside to help the people of New York, only for their pasts to catch up to them.Release Date Studio Disney+, Marvel Studios
