Frank Grillo Says James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Trailer Gave Him Goosebumps

Nov 23, 2024

DC fans are waiting for two big upcoming projects: The Batman: Part II and James Gunn’s Superman. While the former is still a long ways off, the latter is set to fly into theaters in July 2025. The film is less than eight months away from release, and the most fans have seen of Superman comes from two official images and a consortium of leaked set photos. As a result, we’re all on the edge of our seats waiting for a trailer. One lucky person who has seen it is Frank Grillo (who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the DCU), and he’s teased fans with his incredible reaction to it.

Speaking to Collider to promote Creature Commandos, the first official release in the rebooted DCU, Grillo made the entire fan base jealous when he revealed that he’d seen clips from the Superman trailer. “I hope I don’t get in trouble for this — I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer,” the actor teased. Rick Flag Sr. will reportedly be a staple of multiple DCU projects. Grillo has previously described him as DC’s version of Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson in the MCU). As well as lending his voice to Creature Commandos, the actor will play Flag Sr. in Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker. Getting fans even more excited about the trailer, he continued:

“I’m not joking, and I’m not blowing this out of proportion,
my skin was hot and I had goosebumps. That’s how great it is.

Gunn has also been teasing fans with updates about the upcoming teaser. At NYCC in October, the director gave fans a very loose timeframe for when we might expect the trailer. “It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but it also won’t be soon,” he said during the Creature Commandos panel. Just a few weeks later, Gunn confirmed that the trailer hadn’t been completed, as he was still actively working on it.

‘Creature Commandos’ Will Launch the New DCU

Before fans see David Corenswet take on the role of Superman, James Gunn is easing us into the new DCU with the animated show Creature Commandos. With Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, the new team is the paranormal equivalent of the Suicide Squad. Led by Rick Flag Sr., the team comprises Doctor Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma) and Weasel (Sean Gunn).

While the team directly links to Task Force X (The Suicide Squad), Gunn believes they are closer to the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy (which he also directed). He also said Creature Commandos appealed to his love of “oddballs and irregular types and weirdos.” However, there’s one big difference between the two teams. He explained:

“That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”Release Date July 11, 2025 Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn Expand
