‘The Batman’ Star Confirms Role in Scrapped ‘Gotham PD’ Series

Nov 28, 2024

Jeffrey Wright, who played Commissioner Jim Gordon in Matt Reeves’s The Batman, has now provided some insight on the scrapped Gotham PD series that was once in development for HBO. Set within Reeves’s The Batman universe, the series would have centered on a third generation Gotham cop who realizes he’s on the wrong side of the law. Boardwalk Empire showrunner and The Sopranos executive producer Terence Winter would have served as the show’s main creative lead before the project fell apart back in 2022. During an interview with The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, Wright confirmed that he was in early talks to have his iteration of Gordon appear in Gotham PD.

“Yeah, there was a possibility. And then things happen behind the scenes. But Gordon wasn’t to have been central to that, which I thought was cool, too. He was going to pop in and out of that.”

Winters also previously revealed that, much like in The Penguin series, Batman would not have appeared in the show, though his presence would be felt. “The Batman was somebody that lived in that world, but you never really saw him,” he explained to The Playlist back in September. Sadly, we’ll never know just how much of a role Gordon or the Batman would have played.

Jeffrey Wright “Can’t Wait to Get to Gotham” Again in ‘The Batman Part II’

Wright also spoke about the upcoming sequel to The Batman, stating that he’s excited to get back into Reeves’s universe and “can’t wait to get to Gotham.”

“Matt’s been off doing his thing and I’ve been off doing my thing and our things have not intersected again just yet… But they will in the months ahead. I’m excited to see what he’s come up with for the second iteration. I love his version of Gotham… I love that it’s grimy and grounded. And there’s a wonderful realism to it. And it harkens back to kind of a cinematic realism of films of the ‘70s. You know, like obviously there were references to ‘Taxi Driver’ and films like those. It’s just a really wonderful, wonderful, wonderful way of placing his version of Batman. And yeah, I can’t wait to get to Gotham.”

But what can Bat-fans expect from Reeves’s second outing? Details are under wraps at present, but Reeves did tell Entertainment Weekly that the script, penned by himself, Peter Craig, and Mattson Tomlin, is complete, and that events from The Penguin will figure directly into the sequel’s action. This means Colin Farrell will most likely return as Oz Cobb, though whether he’ll be the main villain or play another supporting role – as he did in The Batman – remains to be seen. It’s also unclear if Paul Dano’s The Riddler, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, and Barry Keoghan’s Joker will appear. The Batman Part II is scheduled for an October 2026 release date.
