Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) are finally jumping over to the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again. Fans have long been curious about how the rebooted series will handle their transition to the new franchise, and thankfully, Charlie Cox is saving the day by filling us in on how Marvel Studios is handling the hero’s big move.

Cox played the titular vigilante for three seasons in the critically adored Daredevil, which first premiered on Netflix before leaping over to Disney+. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Cox addressed Daredevil’s migration to Disney+ in Daredevil: Born Again. The actor revealed that Marvel Studios had various discussions about how to handle Daredevil given the prior context of the Netflix series. “There was talk early on about reinventing the whole thing, to see if Matt was a slightly different person,” he said.

However, those discussions all led to one place. Cox confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again isn’t a reboot, and will continue Matt Murdock’s story from the beloved original. He continued:

“But it ended up more of a continuation. A lot of the history follows on. The relationships and dynamics set up in the previous seasons still exist.”

As well as cluing audiences in on the status of the original Daredevil’s canon, Empire’s story also comes with the first look at Matt Murdock, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) in Daredevil: Born Again. The still shows the beloved trio walking through Hell’s Kitchen.

When the “reboot” was first announced, Karen and Foggy’s return was a point of contention at Marvel Studios, with many believing Matt Murdock’s inseparable legal partners wouldn’t be joining him in the MCU. Thankfully, almost the entire cast from the original show is making the shift to Disney+, including Jon Bernthal, Wilson Bethel, and Ayelet Zurer. Check out the new still below.

So how will Daredevil: Born Again usher the heroes into the MCU while making the original show and its relationships canon? Well, according to Charlie Cox, it’s all thanks to a sneaky time-jump. “A few years have passed,” the actor said. This is the first fans have heard of Daredevil: Born Again jumping forward in time from the original show. However, it is the easiest and most logical way to continue the story — after all, Season 3 of Daredevil was the perfect conclusion to the original series.

In Season 3, the relationship between Matt, Karen, and Foggy was fractured and torn apart by Murdock’s obsession with fighting crime, causing Foggy to leave the “Nelson, Murdock, and Page” legal practice. But the series finale reunited them, and Born Again will begin with their friendship in a strong place. “In that time, Matt, Foggy, and Karen have found a pretty good rhythm,” Cox continued. However, that rhythm is disrupted when Wilson Fisk returns to Hell’s Kitchen, with a new goal: to become the mayor of New York. Cox explained:

“Matt’s made peace with his role both as a lawyer and a vigilante. Then, of course, sh*t hits the fan.”
