Frank Grillo Teases ‘Creature Commandos’ Season 2 Virtually Guaranteed in the DCU

Dec 5, 2024

Creature Commandos is just a day away from officially kick-starting James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, and star Frank Grillo believes nothing short of a natural disaster can stop the series from getting renewed for Season 2. After the disbanding of Task Force X, a.k.a. The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is back at Belle Reve penitentiary, putting together a new team of villains. This time, they’re all paranormal, undead, and anything else that wouldn’t qualify as “human.” Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr. who leads the team, and will be a major part of the DC Universe moving forward.

Speaking to Gamesradar+, Frank Grillo said he’s almost certain that Creature Commandos will get a second season. “Unless something goes terribly awry, I think we’ll see a Season 2,” the actor said. Creature Commandos is already a hit with critics. The review embargo ended yesterday and the new animated series debuted with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. This has since dropped to 93%, but that’s still a notable increase compared to the incredibly divisive projects of the old DCU.

“Unless something goes terribly awry, I think we’ll see a Season 2”

In the interview, Grillo discussed what he wants to see from the second season. In Season 1, Waller puts together a team of mismatched super-monsters. Grillo said it “takes the whole season for them to be a symbiotic kinda group.” As a result, he wants to see a second season where they feel like a more complete unit. He explained:

“I’d love to see how it evolves. I’d like to see I’d like to see how they develop as a team because it takes the whole season for them to be a symbiotic kinda group and just see where it goes. Because it starts with me meeting them and kind of going like, what am I doing? What are these things? And then we become a family.”

Why ‘Creature Commandos’ Is Kickstarting the DCU

The upcoming DCU slate is packed full of exciting projects. James Gunn’s Superman is the first official movie release for the updated franchise. Following that, DC Studios are also developing several Batman-related projects, a Supergirl movie, a live-action Lanterns series, and more. So why start the DCU with a strange animated show about heroes most people have never heard of? Well, for James Gunn, it’s simply because they were ready first. Speaking to Den of Geek, he joked:

“It was written.”

But Creature Commandos also acts as a taster for the wider DC Universe. The animated show allows James Gunn to go as wild as he can imagine with the supernatural characters. If that style and tone is to your liking, then you’re in for a wild ride with the new DCU. But, Gunn has also promised that each new DCU project will feel distinctly different. The Lanterns series is said to be inspired by True Detective, while the upcoming Swamp Thing movie is a full-blown horror film. In Gunn’s own words, “we just want to tell a bunch of different stories.”

Creature Commandos is an animated television series that follows a team of supernatural beings, including a werewolf, vampire, and gorgon, assembled by the government for high-risk missions. This unique group navigates various challenges as they leverage their distinct abilities to combat threats. The show offers a blend of action, horror, and dark humor, set in a universe where classic monsters are reimagined as heroes.Release Date December 5, 2024 Cast Indira Varma , Frank Grillo , Zoe Chao , David Harbour , Sean Gunn , Alan Tudyk , Anya Chalotra , Maria Bakalova , Viola Davis , Steve Agee , Benjamin Byron Davis Seasons 1
