David Cornswet’s ‘Superman’ Compared to Christopher Reeve by Frank Grillo
Dec 7, 2024
As James Gunn ushers in a new era for the DC Universe, he’s introducing audiences to yet another Superman. David Corenswet plays the Man of Steel in Gunn’s new movie, set to hit theaters in June 2025, and audiences are understandably nervous about how the project will turn out. But, according to Corenswet’s Superman co-star, Frank Grillo, the Pearl actor is perfect as DC’s Blue Boy Scout.
Grillo sat down with Kristian Harloff to discuss his role as Rick Flag Sr. in the new DCU. Flag Sr. will debut in the animated Creature Commandos, before jumping over into live-action with Superman. When asked about Corenswet’s portrayal as Superman, Grillo had nothing but praise, and even compared him to one of the all-time greats. “With David there’s something very Christopher Reeve about him,” Grillo exclaimed. Alongside Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve is commonly regarded as the best big-screen Superman. Reeve played the Man of Steel four times on screen, between 1978 and 1987.
“With David there’s something very Christopher Reeve about him.”
“He encompasses this aura,” Grillo continued. So far, fans have only seen two official stills of Corenswet as Superman. However, the best look has come via leaked set photos, showing Superman in costume, with a host of other popular DC heroes. While audiences will have to wait until June next year to see Corenswet in action, Frank Grillo has already witnessed it, and he said Corenswet is perfect:
“There’s something about this guy… I don’t know if I could articulate it, but I was like, ‘oh, this guy is Superman.'”
The ‘Superman’ Trailer Is Ready
As fans sit anxiously for Superman to fly into theaters next year, James Gunn has teased DC fans with updates about the film’s trailer. The director and co-president of DC Studios frequently keeps fans updated about the status of DC Studios on social media. Over the past few weeks, James Gunn has teased us about Superman’s trailer, and it appears that it has now been completed, and is heading to theaters in December. The director recently debunked a rumor that stated it was set to release on December 16, but that still leaves the door open for the trailer to arrive sometime that same week.
Alongside David Corenswet and Frank Grillo, Superman also stars as Rachel Brosnahan, Milly Alcock, Isabela Merced, Nicholas Hoult, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Nathan Fillion, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Alan Tudyk, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Sean Gunn, and so many more. As the first live-action DC Studios project, Superman will act as the stepping stone for future movies and shows.

The film is packed full of popular and underappreciated DC heroes. The leaked set photos revealed Superman working with the Green Lantern (Fillion), Mister Terrific (Gethagi), and Hawkgirl (Merced). Meanwhile, Hoult is playing Lex Luthor in the movie. However, it has not been confirmed if he will be the film’s main villain. The first official photo of Corenswet in the Superman suit teased a giant alien villain in the background, which many believe to be the film’s main antagonist. But Gunn is remaining tight-lipped about who it will be.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”Release Date July 11, 2025 Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn Expand
