Anya Taylor-Joy & Miles Teller Fall In Love While Guarding The Door To Hell

Dec 8, 2024

The first trailer for The Gorge has been released as part of the film’s presentation at CCXP. The upcoming action film is directed by Scott Derrickson for Apple TV+, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller as two snipers manning watchtowers on opposite sides of a gorge, guarding against the unknown evil within. Eventually, the movie sees the two forced to work together to stop a potentially world-ending threat. Alongside Taylor-Joy and Teller, the Gorge’s cast includes Alien vet Sigourney Weaver, Wednesday’s William Houston and Arcadian’s Samantha Coughlan.

Now, with just a few months remaining until the movie’s release, The Gorge’s first trailer has been released by Apple TV+. The video starts out by introducing Taylor-Joy’s Drasa and Teller’s Levi, two elite snipers for their countries’ governments, as they are assigned to two watchtowers on opposite sides of the titular chasm and given the objective to make sure that nothing escapes from it.

Having also been forbidden from having communication with one another, the two eventually begin finding ways to talk with one another from across the gorge, slowly forming a bond along the way. However, when the mysterious creatures that lie beneath the chasm’s fog begin to attempt to surface, the duo find their potential love story quickly turning into a horror story. Check out the trailer below:

What The Gorge Trailer Reveals About The Movie
Derrickson’s Big-Budget Return Looks Very Different

The first footage for The Gorge certainly goes a long way to giving some insight for what kind of movie it will be, looking to be a mix of survival action with horror. More specifically, though, even if the trailer indicates the titular chasm is the door to Hell, some of the imagery seen in the footage looks to be more Lovecraftian in nature, even sharing some similarities with the creature designs of Alex Garland’s adaptation of Annihilation. This makes further sense when looking at some of the other behind-the-scenes talent of the film, namely cinematographer Dan Laustsen, who previously did the first Silent Hill movie.

Related 10 Great Movies & TV Shows That Wouldn’t Exist Without Lovecraft The influence of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft has been incredibly far-reaching and many of today’s movies and TV show would not exist without him.

This style of horror also marks an interesting change of pace for Derrickson, whose work in the genre has largely been directly supernatural, particularly his breakout hit Sinister and genre return with The Black Phone. Even compared to his prior venture into the world of big-budget filmmaking with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange, he and cinematographer Ben Davis went for a more psychedelic visual palette in comparison to the similarly colorful, yet more straightforward, visuals shown thus far in The Gorge’s trailer.

Ultimately, one of the biggest things to catch genre fans’ interest from the trailer is the very brief glimpse of the creatures that reside in the titular area. With just a shot of a large claw, it does seem possible the Gorge marketing team will aim to keep the creatures under wraps until closer to the release. Considering the story is more meant to be about the budding romance between Taylor-Joy and Levi’s characters, it also makes sense they wouldn’t want the marketing to veer too heavily away from that element of the movie.

Our Take On The Gorge’s Trailer
A Very Promising First Look At A Unique Romance Twist

Though the horror genre fan in me would like to have seen more from that side of the film, The Gorge’s first trailer does offer a very promising tease of the unique romance at the heart of it. The distant communication the central characters have looks to present Taylor-Joy and Teller with an interesting challenge of how to convey their characters’ chemistry and growing bond, while the tease of the terrors that lie below does leave me intrigued. Additionally, with Sigourney Weaver involved as someone with knowledge of the Gorge’s secrets, it will be interesting to see if Derrickson has a bigger role for her.
