Chris Hemsworth Will Return as Thor in ‘What If…?’ Season 3 on Disney+

Dec 10, 2024

One of the original Avengers will return to the MCU later this month, but perhaps not in the way you’re expecting (or hoping for). It seems that Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, will reportedly reprise the beloved Marvel character in the upcoming third and final season of the animated anthology series, What If…?, which is due to debut on Disney+ on December 22, 2024.

According to The Direct, Marvel Studios has now revealed the cast list for What If…? Season 3, and Chris Hemsworth is on the list, meaning we will finally see (or, more accurately, hear) more from the actor as Thor following the release of the largely panned Thor: Love and Thunder back in 2022.

Hemsworth has provided the voice of Thor in What If…? several times before, and while details of which episode he will feature in this time around remain under wraps, his Thor co-stars Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, Tessa Thompson, who stars as Valkyrie, and Taika Waititi’s Korg are also listed. We do know that one episode will introduce beloved X-Men member Ororo Munroe a.k.a. Storm to the MCU, with the powerful mutant wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir. So, Thor showing up in this episode certainly seems like the safest bet.

‘What If…?’ Season 3 Will Feature Many Returning Marvel Cast Members

Other returning cast members for What If…? Season 3 include Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter/Captain Carter, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector/Moon Knight, and many more. Meanwhile, Storm will be voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith, who reprises her role from X-Men ’97.

As for what the multiverse exploring episodes in the third and final season will entail, one will follow Red Guardian and Bucky Barnes; another will center on the Avengers piloting giant mecha to battle a horde of Hulk monsters; Agatha Harkness will lead a musical episode; and finally, Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop will team-up for a Western adventure.

While the reveal that Chris Hemsworth will reprise the role of Thor in What If…? Season 3 is exciting, it’s admittedly no confirmation of Thor 5. Nothing has been made official so far, but Hemsworth declared back in July that he is waiting by the phone.

“I have loved every second working in the Marvel Universe and if there’s more to come then I’m excited about it. Nothing official yet. I’m sort of waiting for the phone call and, and waiting for the news to see, let’s see what happens. But, you know, I love it.
I have loved every second of the Marvel experience, and I’m always down to do more, but we’re all sort of waiting to hear what’s happening.”

While we await more news regarding Thor 5, it’s clear that Chris Hemsworth is not done with the MCU yet.
