Keira Knightley’s ‘Black Doves’ Reaches #1 On Netflix Streaming Charts

Dec 10, 2024

Black Doves was released earlier this month to rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike, and it is now rising up on Netflix’s streaming charts. Starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, the six-part spy thriller follows the former as a professional spy whose secret lover is assassinated and is now forced to team up with an old friend to keep her safe. Delivering “some of the most captivating storytelling in episodic television this year,” Black Dove has been the must-watch binge on Netflix for the holiday season.

According to Flix Patrol, Black Doves has held the #1 spot on Netflix’s TV charts for the past few days, beating out The Madness and La Brea. Partially inspired by true events, Black Doves blends the spy thriller genre that always does well on the streamer with the holiday season. The six-episode season takes place during Christmas, making the sweat-inducing story the perfect counterprogramming for the jam-packed month of December. While other Christmas-related projects like Red One have been disappointing as of late, Black Doves is impressing with high viewership and overwhelmingly positive response. The series currently has a 98% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Black Dove supporting cast includes Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Omari Douglas, Andrew Koji, Luther Ford, Adeel Akhtar, and Paapa Essiedu. Check out the official synopsis:

“Set against the backdrop of London at Christmas,
Black Doves
is a sharp, action-filled, and heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice. It follows Helen Webb (Keira Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother — and professional spy. For 10 years, she’s been passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organization she works for: the Black Doves. When her secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, her spymaster, the enigmatic Reed (Sarah Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) to keep her safe. ”

Is ‘Black Doves’ Getting a Season 2?

It’s been confirmed that Black Doves is getting a Season 2, as it was renewed well before the first season’s premiere on Netflix on Dec. 5. It’s unclear if the main cast will be returning, including Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, but it’s safe to say that the streamer has plenty of reason to bring them back. Series creator Joe Barton recently discussed Season 2, teasing that it will be taking place in a new setting the second time around and not on Christmas again.

“It’s all about when it would be released. It doesn’t need to be constrained by the Christmas holiday. So it might be that there’s a different [holiday] – Easter maybe? I don’t think it has to necessarily always [be Christmas] which I’m quite sad about, because I love writing stuff set at Christmas.”

Without spoiling it, the ending of Black Doves Season 1 leaves plenty of room for another mystery-filled season. As it pertains to the titular spy organization, there is also a chance other shows set within the same universe could exist, but perhaps not everything needs a spinoff these days. For now, Netflix subscribers can binge the entire first season of Black Doves.

Black Doves is a drama series that centers on the complex interplay of espionage and personal relationships. Focused on Helen Webb, a seasoned spy striving to balance her covert missions with a turbulent family life, the series delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and sacrifice. Starring Keira Knightley, it examines the moral ambiguities faced by those who live double lives in service to their countries.Release Date December 5, 2024 Seasons 1 Network Netflix
