‘Creature Commandos’ Reveals DCU’s Wonder Woman, Booster Gold & More Heroes

Dec 13, 2024

James Gunn’s Creature Commandos serves as the first entry into the rebooted DCU, and it is already setting up the greater cinematic universe in a few major ways. The animated series has given audiences a glimpse into the future of the franchise, revealing the first look at some of DC’s greatest superheroes, including Wonder Woman, Booster Gold, and more. This is certainly not the way many fans envisioned they would see the new version of iconic characters for the first time, but it is quite exciting nonetheless.
In a promo for Creature Commandos Episode 4, which features an apocalyptic future prophesied by the show’s villain, Circe (Anya Chalotra), the DCU’s Wonder Woman, Booster Gold, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, and Robin (likely Damian Wayne) are revealed. While Hawkgirl looks exactly how she does in Superman (played by Isabela Merced), the rest of the superheroes included get comic-accurate outfits diehard fans will instantly recognize. Moreover, Wonder Woman, previously portrayed by Gal Gadot, noticeably sports a different costume than her DCEU counterpart. A previous promo for the episode also revealed Superman, Starfire, Mister Terrific, among others, so fans will have even more to look forward to next week.
It’s safe to say the rebooted universe will be the ultimate reset for DC on the big screen, and it will dig deep into the comics to do so. Most of the teased characters in Creature Commandos, like Booster Gold, Supergirl, and Mister Terrific, are heroes that have either not shown up in a live-action film yet or haven’t done so in many, many years. Gunn seems keen on breaking bread with audiences using less-familiar characters alongside iconic faces like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
‘Creature Commandos’ Sets the Stage For the DCU

The small tease of the DCU’s greatest heroes in Creature Commandos backs up what James Gunn previously said about re-introducing the iconic characters. While fans will be watching brand-new iterations of Superman and Batman, for example, don’t expect DC Studios to tread familiar territory. Gunn, particularly active on social media, reassured fans earlier this year that they will not be re-telling origin stories this time around, as heroes will be introduced as already active members of the cinematic universe.

“I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them. And don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters.”

Superman, which releases in 2025 and may get a trailer very, very soon, will be the official start of the DCU. While Creature Commandos has done a good job thus far giving people a peak at the new universe, the Kryptonian hero will be doing heavy lifting for theatrical audiences. In many ways, the fate of the DCU will rest in Superman’s hands, especially as the water has leveled out in the superhero genre.

Creature Commandos is an animated television series that follows a team of supernatural beings, including a werewolf, vampire, and gorgon, assembled by the government for high-risk missions. This unique group navigates various challenges as they leverage their distinct abilities to combat threats.
