‘Superman’ Fans React to First Footage from James Gunn’s DCU Reboot
Dec 21, 2024
Look up! The first trailer for James Gunn
‘s highly anticipated Superman
reboot has finally landed, and DC fans have quickly taken to social media to air their thoughts, feelings, complaints, and everything else in between. Superman marks the beginning of Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly recalibrated DCU, and while many were disappointed about the reboot and the replacement of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, the first footage from Superman has left many feeling more elated than ever about this latest iteration of the beloved character and superhero icon.
The footage reveals our first official look at, well, everything really. From David Corenswet’s Clark Kent and Superman, to Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, to the assortment of other DC heroes that will be involved, the Superman trailer gives us just enough to know that, yes, it looks like Gunn may have nailed it. “Hokey smokes. Okay, take my money,” demands X/Twitter user @BibChr, with @SweetCarmel77 won over by what they’ve seen, adding, “I’ve been very skeptical but this looks very interesting! Henry Cavill will never be forgotten!”
Praise is already being heaped on lead star David Corenswet
, whose role in Superman is by far his biggest to date. “He was born for the role,” says @BlackMajikMan90. “Man swallowed the role, had doubts but this is looking way better than I imagined,” adds @Dwriteway.
Not Everyone Is Convinced by What They’ve Seen From ‘Superman’ So Far
While the first footage from Superman looks to have pleased those who had faith, and won plenty of naysayers over, there are still those who yearn for Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. “Of course I’ll watch it but feeling like this is a downgrade from Henry Cavill. Getting Brandon Routh and Superman Returns vibes. I hope I’m wrong,” says @shuttjo22. “I’ve come to the point where I think these things are better left in comic books,” adds @cimerians, while @vjv02 expected more, saying, “It’s all over the place, expected better tbh.”

The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director is doing something very different with ‘Superman’.
While there are still some doubting whether Gunn has delivered, opinion is unanimous on one thing: Krpyto is a very good boy. The superpowered pooch makes his silver screen debut in Superman, with director and comic book writer and fan Kevin Smith declaring, “Good boy, Krypto! Great boy, @JamesGunn!” Gunn has proven his affinity for bringing unusual animals to the screen before, and fans are agreed that Krypto could steal the show right from under the Man of Steel. “Krypto is gonna put asses in seats,” says @dveese, while @jordnjnes holds nothing back, adding, “KRYPTO LOOKS FUCKING AMAZING.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman will be led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, with the rest of the cast comprised of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. You can check out the official synopsis for Superman below.
“James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a SUPERMAN who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
