‘Superman’ Will Not Be as Funny, nor as Musical, as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Dec 25, 2024

Details of James Gunn
’s reboot of the DC icon Superman
are now coming thick and fast in anticipation of tomorrow’s trailer, with the director now revealing that his latest comic book movie effort will ditch several of his usual, and most recognizable, traits. In an interview with Gizmodo, Gunn first assuaged any worries that the kind of humor audiences have grown accustomed to in the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad will be carried over into Superman, calling the DCU opener “incredibly serious” while leaving space for humor.

“I start with a place that’s very hopeful, fun… but incredibly grounded [and] incredibly serious all at the same time. It’s humorous, but it certainly is not as [comedic] as either Suicide Squad or Guardians. There’s plenty of humor in it. People like Rachel [Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane] are so funny and David [Corenswet, who plays Superman] is very [funny as well], so there’s humor in it, but it’s trying to create something that is grounded, but also it’s an incredibly fanciful world. It’s fantasy, it’s taking from other things like Game of Thrones where it’s this universe where superheroes actually exist. What are they like? There’s a magic there that’s undeniable.”

Many have worried that Superman will be as quippy and joke-filled as the MCU and Gunn’s previous comedic efforts Slither and Super. Clearly, those worries were misplaced, as the Man of Steel reboot will find the filmmaker delivering a completely different tone to what we’re used to.
James Gunn Will Ditch the Soundtrack for a Score in ‘Superman’

Not only were some Superman fans concerned about the level of humor, many have also wondered if the DC movie will include the same kind of needle-drop moments that, again, James Gunn has become well-known for. Though he excelled at choosing a soundtrack in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn assures fans that, as well as the tone, the sounds will also be very different in Superman. The DCU debut is far more score-driven than any of his previous movies and, yes, it will include “nods” to John Williams’ iconic theme.

“There’s nods to [John] Williams and then also John Murphy’s created this incredibly beautiful score. But the one thing is it is a score, it’s not a soundtrack. So it’s not about the songs. There’s a few songs in it. And of course, I chose those songs beforehand, but it isn’t like any of my previous movies really in terms of the score is what drives it. It’s a much, much more of a score film.”
