Taylor Kitsch & Betty Gilpin Star In Peter Berg’s Brutal Western Mini-Series
Jan 2, 2025
“Squid Game” Season 2 ended Netflix‘s 2024 release calendar with a bang, but the streamer’s stacked 2025 release schedule may keep it from being Netflix’s most-watched series. The first candidate to overtake the popular South Korean series? Mark L. Smith‘s “American Primeval,” which premieres next week in six one-hour installments.

And Netflix has a new “mature-rated” trailer to build up hype for the upcoming western series. Set in the mid-19th century US, “American Primeval” offers a stark, unflinching look at frontier life during the Manifest Destiny era, where everyone is at odds and violence is almost always imminent.
Here’s an official synopsis for “American Primeval,” courtesy of Netflix:
This is America…1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. AMERICAN PRIMEVAL is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.
‘Primeval’ relies on a large cast to tell this complicated story. Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Derek Hinkey, Joe Tippett, Jai Courtney, Preston Mota, Shawnee Pourier, and Shea Whigham star. Guest stars include Kim Coates, Lucas Neff, Kyle Davis, Tokala Black Elk, Nick Hargrove, Irene Bedard, Nanabah Grace, Alex Breaux, Dominic Bogart, Alex Fine, Kip Weeks, and Jeremiah Bitsui.
Pete Berg directs all six episodes of “American Primeval.” He also serves as executive producer with Smith, Eric Newman, and Alex Gayner. Smith receives credits as writer and series creator.
