The season finale of Creature Commandos dropped on Max today, wrapping up the story of Task Force M and their mission in Pokolistan once and for all. After plenty of intrigue, premonitions about the end of the world, and tragic backstories for each member of the Commandos, the series ends on one last sad note with the death of what was perhaps the most innocent member of the team, Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao). Nina’s death came after her attempt to assassinate Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), in which the Princess ended up stabbing her to death instead.
The death was somewhat unexpected, especially with all the development the character had been given in the previous episode. In an interview with The Direct, Chao spoke about why she believed this untimely and tragic death had to happen to a character as innocent and well-intentioned as Nina, and how the death makes sense due to the nature of her character, saying:

“You often, in stories like this, lose your favorite characters sometimes, or the ones that represent the heart of the story. So I understand why she had to go. She was too good for this world. Because I think she, I think her life ended the way she’s always lived it, which is actually kind of by a moral code that other people in her world didn’t have. So, I think even in her death, there’s dignity because I don’t think she could ever really kill another being.”

There’s a Reason Why Those ‘Creature Commandos’ Deaths Hit So Hard

The flashbacks detailing Nina’s struggle to survive and fit in during her childhood make her death even sadder than it already is, showcasing writer James Gunn’s knack for making the most inhuman-looking characters the most empathetic in his stories. While the character didn’t contribute to the team’s assassination mission, she still acted as an excellent moral compass to characters like The Bride (Indira Varma), whom Nina grows close to. Moreover, it’s Nina’s death that motivates the Bride to complete the mission, and eventually be assigned as the leader of a new team of Creature Commandos in the final scene of Season 1.

It’s easy to forget how close James Gunn’s career was to total implosion just a few short years ago.

In the same interview with The Direct, Chao would also express her hope that the character’s death would strike a chord with audiences, saying:

“You know, it’s like, if people feel connected to her, if people feel lost when she dies, then I think I will have done my job. So, hopefully, people will care for her. I think that’s the most important thing, and I’d be very proud if people did, because she’s so worth caring for.”

Creature Commandos has already been renewed for a second season, though no release date for it has been announced yet. With The Bride set to lead a new team of monsters, it will be exciting to see what James Gunn and the team behind the animated series have planned for this new iteration of Task Force M. Whatever it is, fans can be sure to expect the same level of tragic storytelling and empathetic characters that James Gunn has become well known for.
