Andrew Garfield Knows You Won’t Believe He’s Not in ‘Spider-Man 4’

Jan 15, 2025

Andrew Garfield knows nobody will believe him when he says he won’t be in Spider-Man 4. Which means…maybe he will be? Garfield played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before his tenure as the web-head was cut short when Sony Pictures decided to reboot the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seven years later, Garfield got to reprise his role and star alongside both Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s versions of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home…after Garfield spent nearly a year telling the press he was not in the film.
With Spider-Man 4 set to begin filming soon, rumors have already circulated that Garfield will once again reprise his role as what the MCU refers to as “Peter-3” or “The Amazing Spider-Man” in the upcoming film. While speaking with GQ, Garfield said, “I’m gonna disappoint you,” when asked if he would return for the next MCU Spider-Man film. Garfield, though, already knows nobody will believe him about his involvement or lack thereof with the movie due to Spider-Man: No Way Home. “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on,” Garfield said.
Before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield was on the promotional tour for both The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick…Boom! and he was faced with multiple questions from journalists about his involvement in the Spider-Man sequel. Despite Jamie Foxx seemingly spilling the secret in 2020, when he was confirmed to return as Electro, and the trailers highlighting the multiverse villains, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures committed to keeping the reveal of both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire secret until the film’s release. Garfield previously spoke about having to lie when asked questions about Spider-Man: No Way Home, saying it was “like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalist and with people guessing” and saying it was “rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable.”
What We Know About ‘Spider-Man 4’

If Garfield is going to be in Spider-Man 4, it will likely not be revealed until the film hits theaters in July 2026. What is known about Spider-Man 4 at the moment is that Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film will be released two months after Avengers: Doomsday but before Avengers: Secret Wars. Aside from that, plot details are being kept secret as no other cast members have been announced. It is unclear if the film will go for a street-level crime film like the ending of the previous movie seemingly set up or if it will go for another big multiversal epic in hopes of matching the impressive box office of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Here are the ten MCU characters that seem most likely to appear in Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man 4.

If Garfield does not appear in Spider-Man 4, many fans expect him and Tobey Maguire to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. Rumors have circulated that the film will be an Avengers: Endgame-level spectacle that features characters from across Marvel’s cinematic history, not just the MCU. It seems like the perfect film to fulfill fans’ dream since the 2000s to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man share the screen together. Following Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds’s recent “Actors on Actors” appearance for Variety, Avengers: Secret Wars could finally see the Deadpool and Spider-Man crossover fans have been hoping to see for years. Fans will have to wait and see what the future holds, but hopefully, it means Andrew Garfield can be suited as Spider-Man one more time.
