Pink Hats Return to Sundance Following Inauguration of Donald Trump
Jan 28, 2025
In a confirmed nod to the 8,000-person 2016 Women’s March in Park City, Erin Brown Thomas and her show Chasers took to Main Street for a flash mob.
A mob of people in pink hats took to the streets at Sundance this year. No, it’s not 2016, but the stunt was a reference to the infamous protest event that took place at the festival and in cities around the world following the first inauguration of Donald Trump.
On Sunday outside the Egyptian Theater on Main Street, a large group of dancers in hot pink hats broke out into a choreographed routine to celebrate the new one-shot, half-hour comedy Chasers, a TV series pilot debuting at the festival. The flash mob included many members of the Chasers cast and crew.
As a part of the flash mob, the cast and crew handed out buttons featuring phrases such as “Attention starved dreamer in financially perilous situation,” “Grateful that I’m hot,” “Civilized f—king adult,” and “Getting f–ked, Chasing dreams.”
Director Thomas says Chasers is about “young urban creatives chasing their own exploitation and…juxtaposes red flags in dating and the hustle of being in an industry that everyone is trying to get into.”
When asked if the pink hats were a purposeful reference to the 2016 Women’s March, Thomas confirmed, “I don’t want to give too much away about the pilot…. But there is a nod there, yes. There are definitely themes in there that will be touched on in [the show].”
The 2016 Women’s March drew approximately 8,000 people to Park City during Sundance, according to statements from municipal officials at the time. The crowd included celebrities like Chelsea Handler, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Aisha Tyler and many more.
