Godzilla x Kong Star Gives Uncertain Update On Their Monsterverse Future Following Recent Sequel Casting News

Jan 28, 2025

A prominent Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star has offered an uncertain update on their Monsterverse future following recent casting news for the sequel. The upcoming Godzilla x Kong sequel was announced following the theatrical success of the franchise’s latest film, which managed to earn $571.8 million at the global box office against a $135-150 million budget. Arriving on March 26, 2027, casting news has already begun for the film, with The Last of Us star Kaitlyn Dever confirmed to appear in the movie. However, there’s been no news yet about any role reprisals from the previous installment.
Speaking with ScreenRant about her latest film, Peter Hujar’s Day, at Sundance Film Festival, Rebecca Hall gave an uncertain update about her future in the Monsterverse after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The actor, who played Monarch scientist Dr. Ilene Andrews, said she hasn’t heard anything about her reprising her role in the sequel, indicating she might not show up in the next movie. Check out what Hall had to say about her role below:

ScreenRant: You have an extremely wide range of work, including the Monsterverse. You’ve graced us with your presence in two Godzilla vs. Kong movies now, but where is Ilene going next?

Rebecca Hall: I don’t know. Where am I going in the Monsterverse? Nowhere, apparently! No one’s asked me, so I don’t think I’m in the next one.

Ilene was first introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong, where she acted as a guardian for Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a young, deaf Iwi girl who formed a bond with Kong over the course of the movie. The pair became central characters in Godzilla x Kong, with the duo finding Jia’s lost tribe, making the doctor wonder if her surrogate daughter would be staying with them. They also had an important role to play in summoning Mothra, whose appearance was integral to the final fight, where Godzilla and Kong faced off against the Skar King and Shimo.

Making This Monster Godzilla x Kong 2’s Villain Would Fulfill A Rematch Wish Godzilla’s Movies Haven’t Been Able To Do In 54 Years

Making a specific kaiju the next Monsterverse villain would fulfill a plan that filmmakers have been trying to pull off for the last 50 years.

The end of Godzilla x Kong featured Ilene worried Jia would want to stay with the Iwi in the Hollow Earth, but her fears were alleviated when they ended up going home together. While this still left the door open for the pair to come back in a later movie, Hall’s newest statement signals their two-film arc might be over. Since she hasn’t received word on returning for the movie despite Dever’s role already being confirmed, the upcoming installment could be moving away from her story, instead establishing a new storyline about a new group of people involved.
Our Take On Hall Not Coming Back For Godzilla x Kong’s Sequel

The Humans Were Starting To Build Off The Story

While Titans are the stars of the Monsterverse, the use of consistent human characters throughout the franchise has also helped ground the adventures in a familiar set of faces. While they’ve come and gone to make way for new heroes, Ilene’s importance so far has been invaluable to the story, making her seemingly not coming back slightly disappointing. While Hall hasn’t heard any news yet, though, it’s still possible she’ll make an appearance in Godzilla x Kong’s sequel, even her involvement hasn’t been confirmed yet.
