Born Again’s Charlie Cox Would Like To Play Joker in the DCU

Jan 29, 2025

Daredevil: Born Again is Charlie Cox’s triumphant return to the role in his own series after years of build-up and two cameo appearances in other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Serving as a spiritual continuation to the original three-season series on Netflix, the upcoming Disney+ show promises all the same levels of brutality and mature thematic content the last show had. However, could he form part of another, superhero-centric cinematic universe?
During the Daredevil: Born Again Panel at Fan Expo San Francisco, Cox was asked which DC character he would consider playing. The Daredevil actor responded interestingly, wanting to play the iconic Clown Prince of Crime, Joker, saying it would probably be a demanding role. Overall, the actor seemed intent on finding a new way to portray the Joker, saying:

“I wouldn’t want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they’re so brilliant, but I was thinking like, the Joker would be a lot of fun… If you could find a way to do something… You know, I mean, Heath Ledger for me nailed that part obviously… If you could find a new take on it in some way that would be cool.”

Charlie Cox’s Commitment to ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ May Keep Him Away From the DCU

The role of the Joker is one that seems to be highly sought after by various actors, with The Brutalist star Adrien Brody also bringing up how he found the character interesting to play in a recent interview. While Charlie Cox’s choice of a possible role in the DC Universe is undoubtedly intriguing, it doesn’t seem feasible at the time of this writing due to the actor’s seemingly long-term commitment to Matt Murdock. The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin shooting after the premiere of the first season, and Daredevil may show up in other MCU projects down the line as well.

As it stands, only one live-action iteration of the Joker is set to make a return, with Barry Kehogan cast in the role of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his performance as the character in Todd Phillip’s 2019 film, played the character one more time in the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux before being killed off at the end. However, there’s a chance a new actor could take on the role in James Gunn’s DCU, as a Batman film is currently in the works. Although it’s unknown who the film’s villain would be, given that the project is still in the earliest stages of development.
Whatever future lies ahead for the Joker character, it’s exciting to see talents such as Charlie Cox and Adrien Brody be interested in bringing the character to life in some capacity. While Cox may be busy in Hell’s Kitchen for quite some time, there are plenty of talented actors out there who can bring Batman’s greatest enemy to life, and we have yet to see what Kehogan brings to the character after Reeve’s intriguing setup in his first Batman film.
