DCU ‘Lanterns’ Series Star Aaron Pierre Explains His Love for John Stewart

Feb 22, 2025

The new DCU is slowly building out its opening roster of movies and shows, with Creature Commandos having officially kickstarted the new cinematic universe off last year. The big DC release of 2025 is easily Superman, directed by James Gunn. However, another upcoming project has fans really excited. The Green Lantern Corps might finally be done justice in live-action, with Kyle Chandler playing Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in Lanterns. The project is a closely guarded secret at DC Studios, but Pierre just clued fans in on what they can expect from his performance as many people’s favorite Lanterns, John Stewart.
During an interview with BUZZ (via @DCFilmNews on X), Pierre said exactly what fans want to hear about his upcoming performance as John Stewart in Lanterns. When asked what his next big project was, Pierre answered “Right now, I’m locked in and focused on a very beautiful project,” continuing, “A project that’s very dear to my heart. It’s Lanterns and I’ll be portraying the beautiful character of John Stewart, who I love very dearly.” Audiences have already fallen in love with Aaron Pierre because of his dedication to Rebel Ridge’s intense action, and the actor appears to be bringing that same ethos to Lanterns. He explained:

“I’m going to do all in my power to bring him to life in a way that resonates with the people and celebrates that character.”

In DC Comics lore, John Stewart is one of Earth’s most respected Green Lanterns. The character first appeared in Green Lantern #87 in 1971, and was a former marine who left the corps after a falling out with one of his higher officers. Having left the Marine Corps, Stewart then studied architecture and landed a prestigious job. However, the Green Lantern Corps had been interested in Stewart since birth, and Martian Manhunter was sent to test John Stewart in order for him to earn a ring. One which he easily passed.
‘Lanterns’ Scripts Receive Massive Praise by One of Its Stars

Full details about DC Studios’ Lanterns have yet to be revealed. The series has been described as a sci-fi take on HBO’s True Detective, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the leading cop duo. The complete cast list also remains unclear, but some key characters have been unveiled by DC Studios. Poorna Jagannathan will play Zoe in the Lanterns, who is an original recurring character created for the show. Not much is known about her role, but the actress has some immense praise for the upcoming series.
