Channing Tatum’s Canceled ‘Gambit’ Marvel Movie Would Have Been a “Screwball” Rom-Com

Mar 5, 2025

While many were excited to see the titular heroes, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively, finally join the MCU in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, the breakout star of the film was arguably Channing Tatum’s Gambit. The character was finally given the live-action treatment he deserved in the blockbuster hit, with Tatum also fulfilling his own childhood dream of playing the character on the big screen. Most Marvel fans know that the actor was previously in talks to star as Gambit in his own standalone movie, which would have been set in Fox’s X-Men universe. But, no one really knew what the movie would actually have been about… until now.

During an interview with Business Insider, Lizzy Caplan

, who would have co-starred with Channing Tatum in the movie, revealed a lot about the canceled Gambit movie. “We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it,” Caplan said of the progress that was made on the movie before it was scrapped. Gambit was canceled in 2019 when Disney completed its purchase of Fox, and earned back the rights to the X-Men characters. “I think there was a start date. I had had meetings with Channing, and there were a couple different… we had a director, then we didn’t, but I had multiple meetings with Channing and the other producers.”

Channing Tatum must save the President of the United States in the political action thriller.

What might surprise fans the most is the tone the film would have taken…

“They wanted to do, like, a ’30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun,” Caplan revealed.

Had that description been revealed during the build-up to the movie in the late 2010s, fans likely would have been upset about Gambit’s first live-action movie being turned into a “screwball comedy.” However, after Tatum’s hilariously iconic performance in Deadpool & Wolverine, we’re once again incredibly upset that Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie was canceled.
Channing Tatum Could Make an ‘MCU’ Comeback

Disney

The original live-action Gambit movie might be dead, but Channing Tatum’s future as Gambit still remains open. Gambit was one of the most entertaining parts of Deadpool & Wolverine, and the actor’s eccentric performance was heavily praised by almost everyone online. As a result, we are all hoping he gets to wear the purple suit in the MCU again.
Neither Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios, nor Channing Tatum have yet to confirm Gambit’s return in the MCU. The character hasn’t been given a second shot at a standalone film, yet. However, with a deleted scene from Deadpool & Wolverine confirming that Gambit is alive and well in one of the MCU’s timelines, there is always the chance we could see him again in the future.
It’s an opportunity that Channing Tatum is hoping for, as the actor expressed his desire for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to revive the solo Gambit movie in the MCU’s future. “I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears,” Tatum said. “Of course, I’ve said [I’m still interested]. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands.”
