‘Westworld’s Aaron Paul Hopes Canceled Series Could Return for Concluding Chapter
Mar 15, 2025
Fans of Westworld
were disappointed when the sci-fi series was canceled by HBO after four seasons, especially with the series apparently heading towards a conclusion with what would have been its fifth installment. Now, three years later, it appears that the dystopian neo-Western drama might be about to reboot for one final round of robotic chaos.
While promoting his new movie, Ash, Aaron Paul
has sparked up hope that Westworld could potentially return in some form to conclude its genre-bending story. When asked about the series, Paul was careful not to give fans false hope that things are definitely happening, but suggested that talks have been ongoing to try and complete Westworld. He told ComicBook:
“I’m still holding out [hope] … I have the very, very broad strokes. [Co-creator Jonathan Nolan] filled me in a little bit. We’re still plotting to maybe do something, I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but we really do want to have a full circle moment with that. So we’ll see.”

Despite Westworld now seeming like a distant memory, it is always hard to believe that any franchise is gone for good unless the story is completed in the way the creators originally intended. As Westworld clearly had plans for another season in motion when HBO pulled the plug, three years really is no time at all, and that means there is always a chance of the franchise returning in some form.
‘Westworld’ Could Have Run Its Course
HBO
Based on the movie of the same name from the mind of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton, Westworld debuted on HBO in 2016 with an impressive 87% Rotten Tomatoes score. With acting heavyweights like Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Thandiwe Newton, James Marsden, and Ed Harris on board, the series became the next “must-watch” show to come to HBO in the wake of series such as Game of Thrones.
However, like most shows of its nature, Westworld’s production was a costly affair, and as soon as critical ratings and viewership began to dwindle, the writing was on the wall for the series. By the time Season 3 ended, it was already touch-and-go whether Season 4 would be given the green light. When it did arrive, with an eight-episode season, the show barely pulled in 300,000 viewers per episode in the U.S., which was along the way from the 2.2 million who watched the finale of the first season.
Although every series has fans who will stick with it to the very end – just ask viewers of The Walking Dead – the numbers just did not add up for HBO, and that meant that Season 5 was destined not to happen. Although there has been no official word on Westworld having any chance of getting a second chance at life, Paul’s comments have suggested that there are certainly some people working behind the scenes to try and deliver a final chapter in the cautious tale of technology gone awry. Whether we will get to see it is something we can only wait to find out.
