Apr 5, 2025
Summary
Young stars Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen bring the heart of the film to life, showcasing the wonder of A Minecraft Movie.
The movie follows misfit friends pulled into a cubic playground who must journey on a magical quest, starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks.
Myers and Hansen discuss their favorite video games, bonding on set, and Wednesday Season 2.
While Minecraft is for the whole family, it’s so important to see the world freshly through from a young perspective. A Minecraft Movie is stacked with actors to bring in the folks—Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge—but it’s the younger stars of the film that will best translate the wonder of the game to its wide audience of kiddos. Thankfully, director Jared Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame) cast the talented Emma Myers (Wednesday) and newcomer Sebastian Hansen to bring the themes and heart of A Minecraft Movie to life, front and center.
Struggling with their everyday problems and worries, four misfit friends find themselves suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal. On the other side is a bizarre, cubic playground and landscape that thrives on imagination. In order to get home, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (played by Momoa) and Dawn (Brooks), along with Henry and Natalie—played by Hansen and Myers respectively—must master the world as they journey forth on a magical quest with expert crafter, Steve (played by the iconic Black), and earn the skills they need to thrive in the real world.
In this interview, Collider’s Steve Weintraub had a wonderful time talking to Myers and Hansen about the film. Check out the conversation in the video above or the transcript below, where they discuss their favorite video games, the ways the cast and crew bonded as they filmed, and maybe even a detail or two about the upcoming Wednesday Season 2.
Emma Myers Is An O.G. ‘Animal Crossing’ Fan
“My island is killer.”
COLLIDER: Congratulations on the movie. I would be stunned if this is not a huge hit. I’m going to start with, I think, the most important question. Say there’s an emergency, and the only way to save our planet is for each of you to play a video game, and you need to be amazing at it. What is the game you pick and why?
EMMA MYERS: Does it have to be a battle game?
Any game you want.
SEBASTIAN HANSEN: Do we have to say Minecraft?
MYERS: No, because I would be bad. I’m going to go with Animal Crossing because you can’t really lose at Animal Crossing. And my island is killer, so…
Do you still play?
MYERS: Oh, yeah!
Did you start with COVID?
MYERS: No, no, no, I was O.G. Animal Crossing. I had it back on my little DS.
Oh, wow.
MYERS: The Wii! I’ve grown up with Animal Crossing.
Got it. I started with COVID.
MYERS: I do love New Leaf. New Leaf is the best one from the DS.
She’s proving that she plays.
MYERS: I would win when I would play.

HANSEN: I think I could do Minecraft. I think I could beat Minecraft easily. I remember trying to speedrun it during COVID. I think I got under 30 minutes.
MYERS: Wait. To do…?
HANSEN: To beat the game.
MYERS: You killed the Ender Dragon in 30 minutes?
HANSEN: Yeah!
MYERS: How did you do that?
HANSEN …Strats. So I think I could beat it pretty easily without dying.
MYERS: See, that’s why I didn’t pick Minecraft, because I started a new world the other day, and it was seven hours in, and I’d just built a little house.
Both of you could destroy me in this game.
The Set For ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is Entirely Practical!
“Most of the items are real.”

What do you think soon-to-be-fans of this movie would be surprised to learn about the making of the movie?
MYERS: I think they’ll be surprised that a lot of the stuff was practical, like the whole village. That’s not CGI. That whole thing was built on a huge soundstage.
HANSEN: I think that some people are maybe upset by the fact that it’s CGI and it’s not all real. Most of the items are real. We got such a big, fun cast. Any of the BTS, if they record any of it.
Hypothetically, I know you wouldn’t have borrowed anything from set, obviously, but hypothetically, what did you borrow from set with every intention of bringing back?
MYERS: Yeah, yeah. For sure. I borrowed my Xbox.
HANSEN: I borrowed my Xbox, too.
Did you really?
MYERS: We had a server with everybody. The whole crew had a joined server.
HANSEN: And because Microsoft is with Xbox.
MYERS: So they put one in our trailer and I said, well that was very nice gift, thank you Microsoft. It may have been in my suitcase on the way home.

Right. It’s funny. I don’t think they’re going to care that you took it.
MYERS: I hope not!
HANSEN: I mean, it’s been a good five months.
MYERS: It’s been longer than five months, it’s been almost a year.
HANSEN: Oh yeah. More than a year, so…
MYERS: I think they’ve forgotten about it for now.
Emma Myers Teases ‘Wednesday’ Season 2
“There’s going to be a lot of cool little Easter eggs.”

Emma, I do have to ask you an individual question. I’m really looking forward to Wednesday Season 2.
MYERS: Sweet.
Jenna [Ortega] told me that there’s an episode based on slashers. She teased a bunch. It sounds really cool. What do you want to tell people about Season 2?
MYERS: I honestly enjoyed Season 2, script-wise, more than Season 1. I think it’s so fun. There’s going to be a lot of cool little Easter eggs and cool… I don’t want to say too much! That’s all I’ll say. That’s all I’ll say.
Sebastian Hansen & Emma Myers Praise The Cast and Crew of ‘A Minecraft Movie’
“Good job, Jared!”

One of the things that really surprised me about this movie is how offbeat some of the humor is. There’s some weird jokes and some stuff that I wasn’t expecting. It really made me laugh. for both of you, what were some of the things that you were surprised by with the script or some of the stuff that Jared pulled off?
HANSEN: I mean, after watching Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, surprised, definitely. But I think that I just was like, Good job, Jared! The stuff that he pulls off is incredible with the jokes and everything. I couldn’t. I don’t think a lot of people could. He’s definitely a very creative person.
100%.
MYERS: I think also collabing with Jack. The two of them worked so well together. Something that might seem hard to pull off the page and make it funny, in person, was so easy for the two of them. We had a good team going because I could not do what Jack does.
He’s amazing.
MYERS: He’s incredible.
And also he moves really fast.
MYERS: He’s so witty, and it really bugs me because I try to come up with quips on the spot, and I can’t.
Yeah, he’s a little older.
MYERS: That’s true.
