The search for a Yellowstone successor started as soon as Taylor Sheridan’s ranch saga became the biggest show on cable; at this point, it feels like every network and streamer has tried to launch its own version, with wildly uneven results. Netflix has seemed particularly eager to find something to scratch the boots-and-heartbreak itch for the Yellowstone franchise’s enormous audience. In the spring of 2025, it looked like the platform had finally found its answer, with a Texas-set ranching drama that shot straight into the global top ten and drew Yellowstone comparisons from just about every outlet covering it. Eighteen months later, that effort has now come to an end. Netflix has canceled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, a decision that arrives roughly a month and a half after Season 2 premiered on July 23. The series, adapted by showrunner April Blair from Jodi Thomas’ long-running novel series, starred Josh Duhamel as rancher Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly as dance hall owner Quinn O’Grady, in a story that leaned considerably more romantic than Sheridan’s work even while sharing the land disputes and small-town power struggles.

Deadline, which broke the news, noted the show “already was on borrowed time.” While the first season managed about 65.6 million views across its run and cracked Netflix’s top ten in dozens of countries, Season 2 reportedly opened to a fraction of that audience while expanding the ensemble and closing on threads that were clearly meant to carry forward. Blair has spoken about the books offering years of material, given that Thomas’ Ransom Canyon series has grown to include more than a dozen installments.

There’s a small consolation for the audience that did stick around, since the central couple ended the season in a settled place rather than in the middle of a cliffhanger. (Fans of Virgin River, the show Ransom Canyon most resembled once you got past the cowboy hats, have certainly seen worse exits.) Netflix’s neo-Westerns consistently drift toward romance, since the platform’s data has long favored the Virgin River model over the grimmer Sheridan register. But that also means these shows compete with a deep bench of small-town dramas, and Ransom Canyon never quite became appointment viewing the way Yellowstone did for Paramount. It’s worth remembering that Yellowstone itself was famously passed on by HBO before it became a phenomenon, which is a reminder that hits are often obvious only in hindsight.
