James Gunn Hilariously Calls ‘Superman’ Star a “Pain in the Ass”

Apr 8, 2025

Sony Pictures came out slinging some serious webs at CinemaCon as the studio offered huge updates on not only its two upcoming Spider-Man projects, but also, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Karate Kid: Legends. However, it’s now James Gunn and Superman’s turn. Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly anticipated two-hour presentation begins today (Apr. 1) at 4:30 p.m. PDT., and the co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios is facetiously sounding off about what a “pain in the ass” Superman star David Corenswet prior to the panel. Gunn praised the actor in an unusual (but understandable) way during an interview with Time:

“David’s a pain in the ass because he asks a ton of questions about every single little moment. But I honestly think my favorite moments were when I would get irritated by his endless questions and indulge him anyway, and then I’d see him turn those questions into something magical in his performance.”

New ‘Superman’ Test Screening Reactions Soar, but With Some Worrying Turbulance

James Gunn is hoping his DCU will avoid the pitfalls of the past, but might not be completely without its critcs.

Not even Kryptonite seems to be able to slow down Superman in this case, which was already trending on X, formerly Twitter, because of CinemaCon. However, three of the movie’s stars, Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), just added to the excitement with a video they shot together for social media. The trio announced that an extended sneak peek of the Man of Steel’s new big-screen adventure will be featured during Jason Momoa’s upcoming A Minecraft Movie, which opens in theaters this weekend on Apr. 4.
‘Superman’s Fellow Heroes Think of Kal-El as Being “Naive”

DCU

The extended Superman sneak peek, which will play with A Minecraft Movie, seems to have most fans pumped up even more about tonight’s CinemaCon presentation from Warner Bros. Pictures, but the studio will hopefully unveil even more updates, particularly where 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns, and Clayface are concerned. For the moment, though, it is David Corenswet’s world, and the DCU fandom is just basking in it. However, while his version of the Last Son of Krypton appears to be playing nice with his superfriends in the upcoming movie, like Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), apparently some of the film’s heroes think of Kal-El as being a bit “naive.” Director James Gunn said in the same interview:

“He [Clark Kent/Superman] is starting to become successful [at being a reporter and a hero] in the big glitzy city so far away from home. He’s madly in love with a woman who isn’t so sure about him. And he’s made a few superhuman friends who like him but think of him as naive. All these new elements in his life have unbalanced him a bit and as he’s tottering, we’re going to see where he lands in terms of his values and choices.”

The Man of Steel’s kindheartedness also extends to the actor portraying him. In fact, Gunn insisted upon this one specific personality trait if Corenswet wanted to take up the Superman mantle. The Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad filmmaker had worked closely with actors like Chris Pratt and John Cena in the past, and he wanted Corenswet to look to them both for inspiration. Gunn also revealed to Time:

“They [Pratt and Cena] treated everyone with kindness and respect. I’ve seen sets that cater to an actor or director’s ego and that’s just not something that would happen with David. He is Superman, even in his nerdiness. He listens to old jazz standards. Like that’s what he listens to, just as normal procedure. Like Superman, he’s a simple man in complicated times.”

James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman joins the 2025 box office when the Man of Steel finally soars into theaters on July. 11. Meanwhile, more DCU projects are due to drop on the heels of the Man of Steel’s return, including his cousin Kara Zor-El’s (Milly Alcock) first big-screen adventure since 1984. In addition to Alcock and Jason Momoa’s team-up in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), the streaming series Lanterns is also eyeing a debut date that same year.
