Recently speaking with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, Starr revealed what exactly it was about G20 that made him want to play a part in the film. In addition to G20, the pair discuss Starr’s previous work on Banshee, as well as Starr’s feelings towards the upcoming fifth and final season of Prime Video’s popular series The Boys, where he also plays an intense antagonist in Homelander.
How ‘Banshee’ Prepared Antony Starr to Play Homelander
“I’m glad it’s having another day in court.”
COLLIDER: Congrats on G20, but I want to actually ask. I was a huge fan of Banshee. Do you feel like more people are watching Banshee because of The Boys, or has it still not taken off the way that it needs to?
ANTONY STARR: It was an interesting one. So Banshee, when it came out, it was like a decade ago I think. So it did pretty well internationally, but domestically just probably because of where it was positioned and what was going on in the industry at that point, it didn’t really do particularly well domestically in America. It’s had a resurgence because they put it on Max — on HBO Max now, it’s available. It wasn’t for quite a while, so thank you, HBO, you put it on Max, which is great. And since The Boys has had some success, definitely a lot of people have looked at what I’ve been doing on that and going across, and it’s had a little reboot, which has been lovely.
It’s been really great because it’s a good show. It’s a fun show. And actually, that show, the action scenes in that, which I don’t think I could do now, really prepped me well for the likes of some of The Boys, but also G20. We had a lot of fights in that. So, Banshee was really beneficial, and I’m glad it’s having another day in court.
Me too.
Antony Starr Brought Notes for His ‘G20’ Antagonist
“…here’s what I believe I have to offer.”
Jumping into G20, what was it about this script and project for you that said, “Oh, I want to do this?”
STARR: I met with Patricia Riggen, our director, when I was shooting Season 4 of The Boys. And, what I wanted to do wasn’t entirely on the page, so I said, “Well, here’s what I believe I have to offer and what I would want to do with the character.” A lot of it was about just fleshing it out and really trying to give it as much depth as possible and create a real guy, not just a mustache-twirling villain, which I think we got. I think we were able to add some layers to it.
Really, what attracted me to the whole thing was that I put my ideas out, and she said, “Great.” She took notes — or at least pretended to. I don’t know what she actually did, but she at least pretended to. She humored me. But we got on like a house on fire immediately, and then it was kind of a no-brainer. Viola [Davis] is in it, and I get on really well with the director, and it looks like we’ve got the flexibility to build something really interesting. So for me, that was a good deal.
‘The Boys’ Season 5 Is Going to Be a Shocking One
“I think fans are going to be either surprised or shocked, depending on their nervous system.”

As you probably know, I am a huge fan of The Boys. What was your reaction to reading these final scripts and seeing where it’s ultimately going?
STARR: It’s strange because as much as I love the show, I don’t like seeing things outstay their welcome, so I’m kind of glad we’re finishing at five, and that’s it. I love the show and the characters, so it’s a bittersweet moment. But the scripts, I’ve got to say, in typical The Boys fashion, I never see it coming with this show. Every time I think I know what’s going to happen, something else happens. This was no exception, these last scripts. I’m six deep. I haven’t seen the penultimate finale yet, but I know what happens, and I think fans are going to be either surprised or shocked, depending on their nervous system, but very, very entertained.
