Collider’s Steven Weintraub recently interviewed Davis regarding G20, where the pair discussed Davis taking on Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, what drew her to the role of President Sutton, and whether she can actually take over as president currently. COLLIDER: How are you doing?
VIOLA DAVIS: I’m doing wonderful.
I can imagine, because I was at the screening yesterday and watched as the audience was applauding and laughing and loving what they were seeing. So, I’m going to ask you two of the most important questions up front: Was The Woman King and now this all a build-up to you fighting John Wick?
DAVIS: [Laughs] You know what? I don’t know if I can take on John Wick. First of all, I love all of those movies. I’ve seen all of them. But didn’t he take on about 150 people in the last movie?
It might have been 200, but yes.
DAVIS: You think so?
Yeah. It was a lot.
DAVIS: Yeah. You know what? I’d like to try it. I really would. I’d like to try. Well, Halle Berry fought with him.

Yes, exactly.
DAVIS: Not against him. But you know what? I’d like to try.
And I would pay good money to see it.
DAVIS: Oh, would you really?
100%.
DAVIS: All right. I think they’d have to give me a little weapon, though. He’s pretty badass.
We’ll get you a sword, or we’ll get you something to keep him away. I would love it. The next most important question. What do I need to do to have you trade places with our orange president?
DAVIS: [Laughs] Nothing. I would do a very bad job. I would probably do a very bad job. I am someone who just wants everybody to experience love and connection and belonging and everything else. I would probably cry every single day.
I think you would, but I also think that that compassion is what our country is missing. I’m just throwing that out there.

Viola Davis on Challenging “What a Leader Should Look Like”

I’m sure you were offered a lot of scripts. What was it about this one that said, “Oh, yes, I need to do this?”
DAVIS: I’m telling you, I just love a good hero story. I do, I do, I do, I do. I love the Sigourney Weavers, Angelina Jolies, Zoe Saldañas, Charlize Therons, Angela Bassetts – I love seeing women look capable. I love it. I love challenging notions of what a leader should look like and what a superhero would look like. I like surprising, and I felt like this was a surprise. And just a super-fun movie that everyone could watch.
This is going to be a big hit on Prime when it hits. Like the entire world, I’m a huge fan of your work, and I’m just curious, what is it like for you in the lead-up to you stepping on set that first day? Do you have a similar process that you do for all your roles? Pull back the curtain a little bit on how you like to get ready for a role.
DAVIS: You know how I like to get ready? To figure out who I am. Figure out what makes me tick. What is the need? What is the super need? I know that’s super geeky; I’m an acting student. When you figure that out, you figure the character out. What drives them? Is it their need to love? Their need to feel control? And that takes a lot of work — bios, memories, all of that. Then, I got it from there. Then the training, and this was in South Africa. Gabrielle McClain, our trainer, Patricia Riggins, our director, Andre Lazar, our producer, and my husband, Julius Tennon.
