[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of The Righteous Gemstones.]
Summary
Adam Devine and Tony Cavalero bid an emotional farewell to roles they will deeply miss with the end of ‘The Righteous Gemstones.’
Wrapping up the HBO series was bittersweet with tears, speeches, and heartfelt moments.
From Keefe dressing up as Kelvin’s mom to shocking scenes, the actors cherished the experience of filming the final season.
Created, written and executive produced by Danny McBride, the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, currently in its fourth and final season, follows the celebrity televangelist family who may bicker constantly, but who also love each other and have each other’s backs through anything and everything, no matter how wild the idea. And in the series’ final episode, while it might have seemed like darkness would consume them, the Gemstone siblings persevered, and Kelvin Gemstone (Adam Devine) finally got over his own fears and actually married Keefe (Tony Cavalero).
During this interview with Collider, co-stars Devine and Cavalero discussed how much they’re going to miss playing these characters, the lightning in a bottle that’s been four seasons of The Righteous Gemstones, what the last day on set was like, Cavalero’s experience dressing up as Kelvin’s mom, shooting that bloody moment, the wedding, and how Kelvin and Keefe are the real deal.

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Season 4 Review: Praise Be! Danny McBride Sends His Best Show to Date Off on a Gloriously High Note
‘The Righteous Gemstones’ gives us more Baby Billy, more family history, and a surprisingly touching conclusion.
Collider: What was it like for you guys to say goodbye to these characters? Do you think you’re going to miss these characters?
ADAM DEVINE: Anytime you come to the end of a project, you’re like, “Oh, man, I’m going to miss that character.” And then, a lot of times, you don’t. But this one, I think I really will. Not only are the characters incredible, saying goodbye to Kelvin on the last day, taking your clothes off for the last time, you’re like, “Wow, I’m never going to put this type of clothes on ever again,” because he dressed like such an asshole. Not only was that hard, but it was hard to say goodbye to some of the crew members. I was like, “I might not ever see this person again.” You hope you run into them on another project, but you don’t know. And then, you’re going to keep in great touch with most of the cast, but some people live out of state, and you might not be able to visit. That’s just how the business goes and it’s sad because these people end up being like your family.
TONY CAVALERO: This show totally changed my life. My wife and I got a place in Charleston. We spent six to seven months out of the year out there shooting the show. It got us through a pandemic. It got us through a strike. It’s lightning in a bottle to have this kind of experience. This one was unforgettable and very bittersweet, for sure.
‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Adam Devine and Tony Cavalero Got Choked Up Over the End of the Series
“I have a hard time being sincere with my emotions.”
There was the family dynamic, but these relationships also somehow managed to make it through all these seasons. What was the last day like? Are you criers?
CAVALERO: We wrapped at 2:30 in the morning, and they brought Danny [McBride] a poster of the crew signed by everyone. That kicked him off, and once he started sobbing, everyone was off to the races. At first I was like, “Oh, my God, I can’t believe I’m keeping it together.” But by the time I got to the “r” in “together,” I was a sobbing goner, hugging people. I’ll never forget hugging Danny that night. It was just amazing. I thanked him and was so grateful. It was just a wonderful experience.
DEVINE: All the siblings gave a little speech. Danny gave a speech. And then, Walton [Goggins] was like, “Well, I’m going to say something.” And then, Edi [Patterson] wanted to say something. And I was like, “Oh, shit, I guess I have to talk too.” It wasn’t until then that I choked up. I have a hard time being sincere with my emotions. I like to undercut it with a joke. That’s just how I was raised. In that moment, I was like, “Oh, man, this is rough,” being sincere and telling a big group of people how you feel about them, but we got through it.
Tony, dressing up as Kelvin’s mom and crawling into bed with John Goodman and Megan Mullally while singing was truly quite the moment for your character. How did you find the right look?
CAVALERO: You see that in the script and you’re just like, “Oh, my God, this is a dream.”
DEVINE: A nightmare? Is that what you mean by that?
CAVALERO: As an actor that comes from a sketch comedy background, I was just like, “This is going to be so much fun.” Danny is so collaborative and was right there in the room with me. We were testing out different things, and he was like, “Can you sing to him a little bit? Change your voice a little bit. This time, I want you to use an exorcism voice while you’re up there.” It was just play. Like a kid, you’re getting to dress up and play like Halloween. I get to be something totally different. It was such a blast. I’ll never forget that day and the look we landed on.

“There was never a moment that I didn’t give it all to Amber,” says Cassidy Freeman about her time on ‘The Righteous Gemstones.’
Adam, who knew Corey (Seann William Scott) would have his villain moment and shoot the Gemstones while wearing a sequined Michael Jackson costume. What was that like to shoot?
DEVINE: I did not see that coming. We were dragging our bleeding-out bodies across the hallway floor and somehow that was still funny, I’m like, “This show is brilliant.” I don’t know if I’ll ever be on another show that is able to do what this show does, which is to weave the action, the horror, the drama and the comedy, and make them all feel like one cohesive thing that’s also very funny. The fact that was very funny blew me away. It was wild. I was like, “Our show is so fun. No other show is doing this.”
Adam Devine and Tony Cavalero Were on Board With All the Wedding Choices for Kelvin and Keefe
“That was a cool couple of days.”

Kelvin and Keefe got their wedding moment. Was there a conversation about what they would be wearing? How did you work all of that out?
CAVALERO: Our wardrobe designer, Christina [Flannery], is genius. And I remember her sending me that first sketch and being like, “Oh, yeah, this is how they would dress for their wedding, for sure.”
DEVINE: Absolutely. And underneath the tree house. That was really cool. That was a cool couple of days.
CAVALERO: And the bell choir was playing “Personal Jesus.”
