Rebecca Ferguson & Andrew Garfield’s New Fantasy Epic Clutches Stellar Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Aug 24, 2026
Andrew Garfield and Rebecca Ferguson’s new movie, The Magic Faraway Tree, is a magical experience for audiences. Directed by Ben Gregor, the new fantasy epic is based on Enid Blyton’s popular book series, The Faraway Tree. Three technology-obsessed siblings move to the countryside with their parents, where there is no electricity and no access to the internet. However, their lives take a turn when they discover a magical world in the woods, as the family builds a newfound bond. The Magic Faraway Tree was released in the United Kingdom in March 2026, and the positive reviews resulted in a stellar 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it took five months to reach the United States, where audiences finally had a chance to discover Blyton’s fantastical realm. Now, with just over 50 verified ratings, The Magic Faraway Tree and its quirky family have won over moviegoers, as the audience score debuts at 80%.

The fantasy movie catered to families and young children, who were amused by the feel-good story of the Thompsons and their renewed dynamic thanks to the magical tree. Those familiar with Blyton’s original novels appreciated the modern update with the technological influence and the uplifting message about family. The movie’s whimsical tone was also complemented by the vibrant and colorful visuals. The movie was compared to the Paddington series, which makes sense as writer Simon Farnaby also penned the last two installments and Wonka.
While Garfield and Claire Foy were praised for their charming, yet emotional performances as the parents, one criticism was Rebecca Ferguson’s lackluster screen time as the one-dimensional villain. In addition, some critics felt that the story was too safe and lacked urgency, while the subplot with the pasta sauce business was mundane. Meanwhile, some staunch readers were bothered by the significant changes to Blyton’s story. It’s not the first time that The Faraway Tree books have been adapted for the screen. The 1997 series, Enid Blyton’s Enchanted Lands, aired on Children’s BBC and CBBC on Choice and consisted of ten-minute episodes. There is no Rotten Tomatoes score, but the show does have an 8.4 IMDb rating. Meanwhile, the new movie has also been in developmental hell since 2014 before finally making progress in early 2024 when Garfield and Foy were cast.
Despite a lukewarm $1.15 million debut in the United States, the fantasy epic earned much of its box-office success overseas, where it earned $32.2 million in the spring. As a result, The Magic Faraway Tree is successful enough that two sequels are already in development, with production eyed for 2027. While speaking with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Garfield expressed his excitement about making sequels, saying:
“We would love to make more of these. We had such a pleasurable time doing them, and I think they offer a lot to families in the audience.”
Ben Gregor directed The Magic Faraway Tree, while the remaining cast includes Nonso Anozie, Nicola Coughlan, Jessica Gunning, and Jennifer Saunders. The Magic Faraway Tree is now playing in theaters.
