Netflix Officially Revives 21st Century British Classic With New Movie

Sep 8, 2026

The Inbetweeners is back for another adventure after three seasons of the TV show and two films, all of which came out from 2008 to 2014. Created by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, The Inbetweeners is about a group of awkward teenagers navigating life as they get closer to adulthood. The success of the series, which starred Simon Bird (as Will McKenzie), Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper), James Buckley (Jay Cartwright) and Blake Harrison (Neil Sutherland), led the characters to head to the big screen.

After The Inbetweeners 2 was released in 2014, Netflix is stepping in to continue the franchise. The streamer just announced that filming is now underway in the UK on The Inbetweeners 3. Bird, Buckley, Harrison and Thomas are returning for this next installment, which is being directed and written by Beesley and Morris. The duo also serve on the producing team with Claire Jones, Patrick Holland, Mark Besbirel, Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan and Farhana Bhula. Netflix shared an official announcement video teasing the return of Will, Simon, Jay and Neil. The teaser begins with the camera positioned on the ground as four figures approach a car. Slowly, it becomes clear that the vehicle in question is Simon’s yellow Fiat with the red driver’s side door. The four friends have difficulty starting the car at first but eventually get it going. They drive away as the number “3” is shown on the rear window.

In a statement, Beesley and Morris admitted that they’ve been having a lot of fun “hanging out with our friends again,” and they plan to “work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”

The Inbetweeners TV show may have only been on the air for three seasons, but during its run on E4 in the UK, it broke viewership records, which was reflected in the high audience score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave the series positive reviews, while the sitcom earned an 83% score. It also won several honors, including wins at the British Comedy Awards and nominations at the BAFTA TV Awards. Less than a year after the show ended, director Ben Palmer and writers Beesley and Morris released the first Inbetweeners film, which grossed $88.8 million and had the biggest UK comedy debut in theaters. It earned mixed reviews from critics, who gave it a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score was much higher at 70%. The Inbetweeners movie reunited the friend group from the series. After graduating from school, Will, Jay, Neil and Simon went on vacation together to Malia in Greece, and they naturally brought their awkwardness with them. The 2014 sequel followed a similar premise, with the group traveling to Australia.

Beesley and Morris not only returned as screenwriters, but they also directed the film, which grossed $63.8 million. Critics were more receptive to The Inbetweeners 2, with a 69% score, but the audience reception was more muted at 60% compared to its predecessor.
