It’s official: Tom Hanks has been replaced as the beloved fictional professor Robet Langdon in the latest adaptation of the acclaimed Dan Brown book series. After starring in a trilogy of movies, which began in 2006 with The Da Vinci Code, the Oscar-winning actor is no longer in play as the brilliant, mystery-solving symbologist. Netflix’s new small-screen version of the historical thriller franchise is officially on the way, and a new actor has taken on the role made famous by Hanks. Netflix has unveiled the first look at a new television adaptation based on Dan Brown’s best-selling book, The Secret of Secrets. The untitled series, now in production, stars Morgan Spector as Robert Langford and Rebecca Hall as Katherine Solomon. Per Netflix’s official description, the story follows Langdon as “he races against ancient forces — and the clock — to rescue a missing scientist and recover her groundbreaking manuscript, which contains discoveries that have the power to forever change humanity’s understanding of the mind.” Like previous Langdon adventures, the series promises to be a blend of science and mystical lore.

It has been confirmed that Hall’s Katherine Solomon will serve as Langdon’s first ever “serious love interest.” On top of a twisty mystery, Emmy-winning showrunner Carlton Cuse says this new dynamic “changes many of the ways he sees the world,” creating an “exciting evolution of the character.” Though Langdon is almost always accompanied by a female protagonist, it sounds like The Secret of Secrets adaptation is exploring a truly new avenue for the professor. The Secret of Secrets is the sixth and most recent installment of the book series that will be released in 2025. Despite starting back in 2000 with Angels & Demons (adapted in the second film starring Hanks), the Robert Langdon franchise continues strong, with Dan Brown serving as a co-creator and executive producer on the upcoming Netflix show. Carlton Cuse (Lost) acts as the sole showrunner on The Secret of Secrets series, while also writing and executive producing.

Alongside Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age) and Rebecca Hall (Onslaught), Netflix’s The Secret of Secrets adaptation includes an impressive ensemble cast.
