Jason Momoa’s Epic Historical Action Thriller Officially Getting New Release

Sep 12, 2026

Apple TV has established itself as a rising force in streaming entertainment. From Silo and Dark Matter to Pluribus and Ted Lasso, there is something for everyone, and not only that, but a ton of huge star power at the center. In 2019, Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) made his Apple TV debut in See, a sci-fi show set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia where people are blind. See ended after Season 3 without much fanfare, but in 2025, Momoa made his grand return to streaming inChief of War. Starring Momoa as Kaʻiana, a Native Hawaiian warrior and one of the first to travel outside the Hawaiian Islands, the historical action epic focused on Hawaii’s unification under the prophesied rule of Kamehameha I in the late 18th century. Momoa not only stars in Chief of War, but he also co-created, co-wrote, and executive produced the show along with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.

So far, the historical drama has only one season, withTwilight’s Justin Chon directing the first two episodes of the nine-part series and Momoa helming the series finale. Chief of War Season 1 earned critical acclaim, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In their reviews, critics praised the show’s commitment to historical accuracy, achieved with cultural advisors and a majority-Polynesian cast, as well as Momoa’s strong lead performance. If that sounds appealing, here’s some good news: Chief of War Season 1 Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on Nov. 17. Chief of War has already shown its prowess in the battle of the streaming charts, reaching the global number one spot in 2025. With all this success, it’d be natural to think that a Season 2 would be on the horizon, but so far, there’s been no official confirmation of a season renewal from Apple TV. However, Momoa confirmed (via Comic Book Resources) that it wasn’t due to a lack of stories, but the show’s future was simply uncertain, especially since it was originally pitched as a limited series.

Since this is a passion project for Momoa and everyone involved, there is no doubt that a lot of work is happening behind the scenes. And, according to a Hawaii News Now report in July, producers believe it could bear some fruit, as they expect to hear about a potential Season 2 and Season 3 this month. In the meantime, the actor has plenty of huge projects in the works, including Street Fighter, Dune: Part Three, and A Minecraft Movie Squared.
