‘A Lot of People Don’t Know the Difference’

Jul 27, 2024

Warning! The Second Half of This Story Contains MAJOR SPOILERS from Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine is finally here and ready to tip the scales even further in the MCU’s favor against the now DCU. Apparently, though, some moviegoers still don’t know the difference between an Ant-Man and a Blue Beetle. More to the point, the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, just downplayed the ongoing big-screen rivalry between DC and Marvel Comics because of a compliment paid to him by a fan regarding 2023’s Xolo Maridueña-led Blue Beetle film. When asked if it’s good for DC to be “equally competitive” when stacked up against Marvel, Feige responded in an interview with Cinemablend:

“Yes, I’ve always said yes, because number one, I want to see great movies.
And number two,
I want there to be great movies in theaters for audiences to go to.
And in between our movies, be reminded that going to the movies is an incredible and singular emotional activity.
So, the more great movies there are…”

Feige continued by saying in the same sit-down:

“Twisters this weekend is overperforming.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I can’t wait to. So, that’s exciting.
And then when it comes to the distinguished competition, as they say, a lot of people don’t know the difference.
Somebody just said,
‘Congrats on Blue Beetle’ to me! People don’t know [laughter].”

Deadpool & Wolverine’s ‘Super’ Cameo

Oh, Henry! And no, that reference has nothing to do with the once beloved candy bar. As Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) says in Deadpool & Wolverine, paraphrasing, of course, it’s time for fans to get out their special socks and geek out about those glorious cameos in the MCU’s latest entry. And while Dafne Keen’s return as X-23 was already revealed in the final trailer, there were several secret appearances which didn’t get spoiled leading up to the film’s debut.

Fans getting the chance to see Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Wesley Snipes’ Blade team-up together in the Void against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) was jaw-dropping, to be sure. However, one “super” cameo, in particular, took a huge swing at DC and Marvel’s so-called big-screen rivalry. When Wade, aka Deadpool, starts traveling the multiverse in search of a Wolverine to help him, the Merc with a Mouth stumbles upon none other than Henry Cavill!

Cavill portrayed Superman/Clark Kent in a number of the now defunct DCEU entries, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both the good and the bad Justice League interpretations and briefly in the post-credits’ scene for Black Adam, which was headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

When Wade stumbles upon the cigar-smoking Cavillrine, as referred to in the credits, the chimichanga-loving Mutant tells Cavill’s version of the Wolverine that Marvel is going to treat him SO MUCH better than DC did. However, Wade quickly high tails it out of there when the Cavillrine threatens to attack him.

While that particular scene didn’t warrant Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” being played in the background, director Shawn Levy gives the DC/Marvel rivalry a tiny nod as he pokes the bear, which, of course, symbolizes how Cavill was controversially replaced by David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
