A New ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Animated Project is Coming From Netflix

Nov 30, 2024

The Cyberpunk 2077 publisher confirmed that fans will see a new animated project for the series on Netflix. Chief financial officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, teased that CD Projekt Red is headed back to the fictional metropolis of Night City very soon. The studio has officially partnered with Netflix for a brand-new Cyberpunk animation project. Nielubowicz said,

“I’m also very happy to announce that we’re working on another animation project set in the Cyberpunk universe, which will be released on Netflix.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person perspective, action role-playing game developed by the Polish studio CD Projekt Red. Based on Mike Pondsmith’s game series, the story follows a mercenary named V, voiced by Gavin Drea and Cherami Leigh. After V accidentally gets imbued with the memories and behavior of legendary rockstar and terrorist Johnny Silverhand, voiced by Keanu Reeves, he must travel to the dystopian Cyberpunk universe in order to find a way to separate them and survive. The new animated project is in addition to the already-announced live-action film also hailing from Netflix.

It’s yet to be revealed which animation studio will be working on the project. The spin-off series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, was produced by Studio Trigger. That series followed a teenager, named David Martinez, thrust into the crime-riddled underbelly of Night City, California. The series won Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. If the new Cyberpunk series were to be animated in-house instead of by Studio Trigger, fans might see a different animation or art style which could help differentiate it from its predecessor. Netflix teased the anime project earlier this year at Geeked Week. CD Projekt Red is working on a couple of different projects, including a remake of The Witcher 1, Witcher 4, and a Witcher spin-off.

Video Game Adaptations Coming To Netflix

Netflix has more video game adaptations in the pipeline. Building off its wildly successful Arcane series, the show recently earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for both seasons, with some calling it the best video game adaptation and animated series ever made. Although there will be no third season Arcane, other League of Legends-based shows are in development at the streamer. Co-creator Christian Linke revealed that the team is exploring a bunch of different show ideas and teased one project featuring 3 new regions in the universe. However, audiences will likely not see these until 2026 or 2027.

An adaptation of the card game A Magic: The Gathering was also announced at Geeked Week in September. It could attract many Arcane fans during the long wait for the next LoL series. Terry Matalas, behind Star Trek: Picard and Marvel’s Vision series, is set to showrun and executive produce. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep animated movie is also premiering soon, exclusively on Netflix on Feb. 11, 2025. Meanwhile, Whats on Netflix reports two Assasin’s Creed series are in the works, with one being live-action and the second animated. The streamer is also partnering with 2K, Take Two, and Vertigo Entertainment on a Bioshock film.

While Arcane was incredibly popular, it was also very expensive to make. The Netflix animated series cost about $250 million to produce across both seasons, making it the most expensive animated series ever made. With that figure in mind, developing multiple new animated projects from different franchises seems ambitious. It will be interesting to see which or how many of these projects make it to our screens.
