Anna Delvey Blasts Dancing with the Stars After Early Elimination

Oct 2, 2024

Dancing with the Stars may be a positive experience for many of its celebrity competitors, but Anna Delvey (born Anna Sorokin) is not among them. Delvey was eliminated during the ongoing 33rd season’s September 24 episode, making her and Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Tori Spelling the first two stars to exit the ballroom. While Spelling has spoken positively about her experience, Delvey’s comments tell a different story. While speaking with NBC News, Delvey, whose casting was met with plenty of criticism from show fans, said she felt Dancing with the Stars exploited her for attention:

“I feel that the show so obviously used me to drive up the ratings, that they never had any plans to give me any chance to grow and only cared about exploiting me for attention. It was predatory of them to try [to] make me feel inadequate and stupid all while I did get progressively better yet they chose to disregard that.”

This isn’t the first time Delvey has spoken poorly about the show, either. Following Delvey and partner Ezra Sosa’s elimination, on “Oscar Night,” DWTS co-host Julianne Hough asked Delvey what she would be taking away from her time on the series. Delvey simply responded: “Nothing.” This response incensed fans of the dancing competition, who took to social media to express their disappointment with Delvey’s reaction.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Delvey doubled down on that response during an appearance on the September 28 episode of Spelling’s podcast, misSPELLING, where she said her statement was “the truth.” She shared that even after doing what she was instructed to do, she “still was rejected,” before adding that she and Spelling exiting the competition before Eric Roberts and Reginald VelJohnson (who has the lowest scores on the leaderboard) was “an attempt of an embarrassment.” For the record, Delvey won’t be keeping up with the rest of the season but says she is rooting for VelJohnson to take home the mirrorball trophy.

Delvey, whose popularity – or infamy – grew following Netflix’s 2022 hit series Inventing Anna, was convicted on eight counts, including grand larceny and theft of services, in 2019. After being released from prison in 2021, Delvey was detained by immigration authorities and spent another 18 months behind bars. She was released on house arrest in 2022 and has since moved to New York’s Hudson Valley, but as the terms of her house arrest were loosened, Delvey was allowed to travel to Los Angeles to compete in the series, where she notably donned an ankle monitor.

While Delvey’s stint on DWTS was short-lived, it won’t be the last that audiences see of her. She recently told Newsweek that she was working to “reclaim her narrative:”

“I’ve been filming a feature-length documentary for a major platform that I can’t wait for everyone to see. I feel like my story has been told for me by other people, so I’m excited to reclaim my narrative and get the opportunity to tell my own story.”
