Anthony Mackie on How Far He Has Come Compared to His Family in His MCU Journey
Feb 12, 2025
Anthony Mackie
hasn’t been shy when discussing what the role of Captain America means to him. The actor, who took on the mantle in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is finally leading his own Marvel Cinematic Universe film with Captain America: Brave New World, set to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend. While promoting the film, Mackie would discuss how his approach to the role is significantly impacted by the challenges his family and his father specifically faced, as he would say at a panel:
“My father was told he had to drop out of school in eighth grade to pick cotton with my grandfather, and I’m Captain America. When you look at it that way, it hits differently.”
Mackie has most recently talked about what he believes the superhero represents, which garnered some controversy from those who misinterpreted his words and called him “Anti-American.” Now, with these new comments, it’s clear that the actor sees Captain America as a culmination of the work his own family put into him to achieve his dreams of becoming a symbol of representation on the big screen.
Despite the production troubles, delays, and frequent reshoots that Brave New World had to go through to get made, it’s still encouraging to see how much faith and work has been put into a major superhero blockbuster with a black Captain America at the center of it all. Moreover, it’s clear from reactions on social media that Mackie’s comments have helped people understand an overlooked aspect of American History.
Anthony Mackie Shed Light on An Unpleasant Side of American History
Following DiscussingFilm’s post of the video, several replies to Mackie’s comments doubted the validity of what he was saying about his own family history, showcasing the ignorance and lack of awareness of the practices of sharecropping, a practice that was practically legalized slavery due to being kept in a place of debt by the farmers that would employ those taking up the job of a sharecropper. Many were quick to point out the existence of the trade, supporting Mackie in his comments.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Director Confirms Wolverine Connection Every MCU Fan Already Knew Was Coming
The MCU is about to make one of the biggest leaps towards the X-Men with a new discovery in ‘Brave New World.’
One user on X commented on the video, saying, “That’s a powerful perspective. Love seeing the strong values and hard work in that family legacy.” Others expressed sadness and respect for what Mackie’s family had to endure before becoming successful enough on their own to give the actor an opportunity in show business. Overall, Mackie’s look back at how far his family has come is incredibly inspiring, especially as this intimate detail about his grandfather and father isn’t something he had to share, but a detail he felt was important in his journey in playing Captain America.
Hopefully, Mackie has a bright future ahead of him as the superhero. With confirmation that it would be Captain America leading the Avengers in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, we can at least look forward to him taking on an exciting new role in what will more than likely be the MCU’s biggest event film yet. For now, fans can see Sam Wilson fight Red Hulk when Brave New World hits theaters next weekend.
